About the Neighbourhood
Montmartre and Sacré-Cœur, seen from the Seine
Montmartre and Sacré-Cœur, seen from the Seine
Strolling through Montmartre Sacré-Cœur, one discovers the magic that captivated artists who lived and worked in this neighbourhood, like Picasso, Toulouse-Lautrec, Monet and Van Gogh, as well as great photographers like Nadar, Cartier-Bresson and Jacques Henry-Lartigue. Montmartre has retained its village character, and the narrow, winding cobbled streets are filled with fine restaurants, patisseries, gourmet shops, galleries, and craft vendors. Within easy walking distance are the great basilica of Sacré-Cœur, the colourful public square of la Place du Tertre, where artists set up their easels, and La Place des Abbesses, with its famous art nouveau métro station.

Turn left on leaving the apartment, and one comes to Rue Lepic, famous for its street merchants. Further on, one comes to the elegant Palais Garnier Opera House, completed in 1875, which now features ballet and other concerts, and offers guided tours for visitors. Close by are the quintessentially Parisian department stores, Galeries Lafayette and Le Printemps, with their colorful domed interiors and unrivalled selection of clothing & accessories. Cultural attractions of the quarter also include three jewel-like museums: the Musée de Montmartre, which once housed the studios of Renoir and Suzanne Valadon; the Musée Gustav Moreau, the home and studio of the influential symbolist French painter; and the Musée de la Vie Romantique, with its attractive terrace and collection of the belongings of George Sand, the celebrated 19th century writer.
