About the Property
The swimming pool
The swimming pool
Chestnut Cottage was built as a farmhouse in the 18th century from the honey-coloured stone of the Périgord region. Its recent restoration combines all of the house’s traditional character with modern comfort and conveniences. The spacious, sun-filled two-storey house has four double and twin bedrooms to take up to eight guests, with an additional full single bed available on request.

The house is set in the 50 acre (20-hectare) estate of the Domaine le Ruisseau, which was once the ancestral home of a dynasty of mayors. The estate is dotted with walking trails, ruined cottages, picnic glades, woods, and a little lake where guests can take a boat. A gentle stream runs through the length of the estate, and wildlife abounds, including heron, deer, rabbit and sometimes wild boar.

The living room
The living room
Inside the house, comfortable sofas and armchairs in the large living room invite one to relax in front of the wood-burning fireplace, with satellite television, DVD, video, and a stereo.

Through a metre-thick stone and oak-beamed opening is the spacious, fully-equipped farmhouse kitchen, with a fridge-freezer, a double oven, a ceramic stovetop, a microwave, a dishwasher, and a washing machine. A large dining table seats twelve. Under-floor central heating warms the hand-painted ceramic tiled floor.

In each of the four bedrooms, chestnut beams line the ceilings, matching the chestnut parquet floors. The first bedroom is on the ground floor, with the other three upstairs.

From one of the upstairs bedrooms, a door opens onto a roof terrace overlooking the pool. All bedrooms have fine views of the pool, lake, stream, or gardens. There are two luxury bathrooms (one with a hydro-massage shower) and two separate toilets, one on each floor.

Outside the kitchen, the terrace is equipped with a barbecue and outdoor dining furniture looking onto the pool and private gardens by the stream.

The chlorine-free, 15 x 7 metre floodlit heated pool is designed both for swimming and playing for children and adults. The pool and summer house offers a range of sports facilities, including table tennis, badminton, boules, and darts.

Special features: • Pool on the property

About the Area
Chestnut Cottage is set in the “Périgord Noir”, the heart of the Dordogne, with easy access to the region’s chateaux, rivers and market towns. The house is five minutes from the town of Les Eyzies, a major site of prehistory. It is two minutes to the nearest restaurant, and five minutes to a bakery, pharmacy, shops and a small supermarket. Within 15 minutes are the towns of Le Bugue and St-Cyprien, with large supermarkets and a range of other facilities.
This is an ideal spot for anyone who enjoys walking. From the house, one can explore miles of walks through forests and countryside, by rivers, lakes and medieval villages. Among the sports available locally are golf, canoeing, tennis, mountain biking, horse riding, fishing, hot air ballooning, and climbing.
About the Region
Within a short drive, one can visit the walled medieval city of Sarlat, a world heritage site, and other medieval towns including Montignac, Périgueux and Bergerac. The region’s rich heritage stretches all the way back to the cave paintings at Lascaux.
The Dordogne is also renowned for its cuisine and wine. Among the region’s culinary specialties are foie gras, walnut salad, magret de canard, and truffles. There are many wine estates to visit; particularly recommended are those at Bergerac, Pecharmant, Saussignac and Monbazillac. Among the many things to visit within an hour or two are the city of Bordeaux, Limoges, and Toulouse, as well as a great range of medieval villages and towns, festivals, antique dealers, and vibrant street markets. Further afield, Spain and the Pyrénées mountains are less than four hours.
