Le Couvent des Ursulines is a group of family friendly apartments in the heart of the old town of Pézenas. The property features a high walled garden with plane trees, palm trees, and a swimming pool. The garden is popular with children and very safe. The owners, Jean-François and his English wife Nikki, have transformed the graceful 18th-century convent into four tastefully contemporary mezzanine apartments, of which two are featured here: Marguerite and Octopus.

Inside each apartment, arched French windows lead from the terrace into a bright, high-ceilinged open-plan salon, furnished with deep sofas, a wooden dining table and a hand-crafted chandelier. A delicate metalwork spiral stair leads to a snug mezzanine sitting room while a neat fitted kitchen is tucked into a corner.

Light-filled bedrooms, warm in peach and pink, have a selection of antiques. Jean-François and Nikki also run a lively café in town, and are more than happy to be of assistance with holiday tips and any other questions guests may have.

The town of Pézenas, with Le Couvent des Ursulines circled.
The lively town of Pézenas is one of the most picturesque in the Languedoc region. Located in the heart of wine-producing country, 30 minutes west of Montpellier, 20 minutes north of the Mediterranean coast and 30 minutes south of the Languedoc Regional Park, the town features great traditional architecture and a relaxed pace of life.

There is a wide choice of restaurants in the winding streets, and the town hosts many summer festivals, concerts and cultural events. Pézenas is famous throughout France for its antique and bric-à-brac shops, and its weekly Saturday market. Guests may also book French lessons and guided excursions throughout the area to fully enjoy your stay.

The architectural delights in the centre of Pézenas
The surrounding countryside is filled with private wine domains, all of which welcome visitors to taste the local produce, and give a good introduction to the many up-and-coming and already famous appellations. The main attraction however remains the Mediterranean coastline, which is just 20 kilometres from Pézenas. Child-friendly beaches offer all watersports facilities, cafés and restaurants. There is a choice of golf courses at Béziers, Lamalou and Cap d’Agde.

The Cap is also the place to be seen for the chic Paris crowd that converges every August. Nightclubs and lively bars and restaurants dominate the resort, while for the kids there is the huge waterpark, ‘Aqualand’. Elsewhere, don’t miss the Canal du Midi, Lake Salagou, hiking and canoeing in the Orb valley, Pont du Gard, Carcassonne, the pink flamingos and white horses of the Camargue, and the famous half bridge and Papal Palace in Avignon.
