About the Area

Olive groves
Olive groves
Croagnes is situated just 2km from the village of Saint Saturnin les Apt. Excellent pastries and breads are available at the local patisserie, and other provisions can be picked up at the grocery stores. There are several restaurants, cafés, and bars in the village, where visitors can enjoy a typical Pastis on the rocks. A visit to the open market is essential, where local produce, cheeses, meats, and flowers are available. For recreation, there is a public swimming pool and a tennis court in Saint-Saturnin, and a lake nearby. The quiet countryside is perfect for walking around, with rolling hills and fields of lavender, cherry trees, and fig trees.

About the Region

The nearby village of Saint-Saturnin
The nearby village of Saint-Saturnin
Just 10km away lies Apt, a village built by the Romans 2,000 years ago. A visit to Apt’s famous cathedral of Sainte-Anne is a must. The crypt is open to visitors, and is said to contain relics of Sainte-Anne, mother of the Virgin Mary. Apt has a lively market, featuring interesting products such as colourful fabrics, antiques, and woven baskets. This part of France is filled with Roman heritage. Leaving Apt to the west, one crosses Pont Julien, one of the best preserved Roman bridges in France. This road leads to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, known as the birthplace of the famous astrologer and prophet, Nostradamus (Michel de Nostre Dame). His life is chronicled in the Musée Alpilles Pierre de Brun, which is located in a 16th century château. The astrologer's home is at Maillane, 7km away.
The church in Saint-Saturnin

At the nearby town of Glanum, there is evidence of a neolithic civilization, with many prehistoric relics. Further west is Les Baux de Provence, with its clifftop fortress which was carved out of stone in the 13th century. It’s worth walking uphill to the castle, to get a full appreciation of why it remained impregnable… until it fell. 40 km from Croagnes is Avignon, the City of Popes. It’s an excellent choice for a day trip, as it is full of historic and cultural places of interest. Visit the Palais des Papes, where popes resided during the turbulent 14th century, and the Museum of Le Petit Palais, home to the most remarkable collection of Italian art in France. Further afield, there’s Marseille, with its beautiful old port, or the beaches of the Côte d'Azur.

We will long miss the view and the hot afternoon breeze rising from the valley. Somehow, our many photographs cannot possibly capture the peace and fragrance of this place! Croagnes was a treat for the whole family and we look forward to returning to this lovely house and seeing the continued fruit of your labour. Thanks again for everything.
