The medieval town of Bergerac and its airport are 15 kilometres from Domaine d'Eyssal. Bergerac has an excellent range of shops, restaurants, cafés and supermarkets, and holds a market on Wednesday and Saturday, selling fresh regional produce and specialties.
Bergerac is the centre of a famous winemaking area, and the owners of Domaine d'Eyssal can suggest vineyards to visit, where one can sample and buy the wines. Within a short drive there are several castles worth visiting, including the 16th century Château de Monbazillac and its vineyards, the medieval Château de Lanquais, the Château de Montréal, and the Château de Bannes.
Typical of the fortified towns from that time is the medieval village of Beynac, which is perched high above a cliff, dominated by a castle. Across the valley are the Château des Milandes and the Château de Marqueyssac, whose gardens alone are well worth seeing.
Also within easy reach is the city of Périgueux, which has a pedestrian area featuring great shopping, and plenty of buildings dating from the Roman and medieval periods.
The city of Saint-Émilion is also well worth visiting. Also a World Heritage site, its origins go back to prehistoric times and it has been a centre of winemaking since the second century AD. It is one of the main red wine areas of the Bordeaux region.
