Built as a wine storehouse or chais in the 17th century and recently redecorated in the rustic local style, Domaine Saint Georges is a one-storey stone home with three bedrooms to sleep up to six guests.

A small vineyard producing Syrah and Carignan wines surrounds the property. The home faces the Corbières mountain range and enjoys plenty of sunshine all year round. The owners’ home is on the same property, and guests may use their 5x12 metre outdoor swimming pool on request. The owners are available to help if needed, but otherwise respect their guests’ privacy.

Three steps lead up to the front door, which opens into an open-plan kitchen and living area. The kitchen is fully equipped with a fridge-freezer, dishwasher, clothes washer, stove and microwave. A dining table seats six under the pitched wooden roof.

In the living area, relax on the sofa and enjoy a television, DVD player, CD player, and broadband internet access.

The three bedrooms are all on ground level. Each has its own ensuite bathroom. The master bedroom has a double bed and each of the other two bedrooms has a pair of single beds.

In front of the house is a grassy outdoor dining area with a table and chairs and a barbecue shaded by pine trees. Enjoy meals overlooking the surrounding vineyards and the Corbières mountains beyond.

Domaine Saint Georges is located in a relatively flat area between the great mountain ranges of the Massif Central and the Pyrénées. The owners can lend bicycles to their guests, and it is always enjoyable to discover the quiet local countryside on two wheels.

The medieval Cathar sect was based in this region, and many of the castles and fortified towns date from the turbulent time of the Cathar suppression. Tennis courts, horse riding, and a 25 metre municipal swimming pool are all available within a few kilometres.

The medieval citadel of Carcassonne is 15 kilometres from the house. This spectacular fortified town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Outside the medieval walls is a modern city with a good range of shops and services. Carcassonne hosts a gourmet market every Saturday morning.

Among the many regional landmarks are the Canal du Midi, the 17th century engineering marvel which connects the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. It flows through the region and one can walk or cycle along its flat towpaths for hours, or hire a canal boat and take a longer trip.

The beaches of the Mediterranean are just 50 kilometres away, and one can visit the cities of Narbonne and Perpignan, close to the Spanish border. The Pyrénées mountains are a couple of hours south, with great opportunities for hillwalking.
