About the Property
The tennis court
The tennis court
Fontenille is an 18th century farmhouse, extended with a new modern section, with accommodation for up to ten guests in four bedrooms on two floors.

It stands on a third of a hectare (almost an acre) of enclosed grounds, with a 6 by 12 metre swimming pool, a tennis court, trees, flowers, and a lawn. The pool is surrounded by a terraced area furnished with sun beds, including a shady covered section.

Inside the house is a fully equipped kitchen with a large antique dining table. A living room with five sofas and a billiard table and floor to ceiling windows overlooks the swimming pool. In the library, a sofa and three armchairs surround a big open fireplace.

Each of the four bedrooms has its own ensuite bathroom and toilet. Two are on the ground floor, and the other two are upstairs. Each of the first and second bedrooms has a single bed and a pair of large single or small double beds (120 cm / 48 inches wide). The third and fourth bedrooms have two single beds apiece.

The style of the house is Brazilian, with bright colours and a collection of Brazilian paintings on the walls. The whole house is awash with light from dawn to sunset.

Fontenille is set a few hundred metres from the road, and is shielded by tall trees, creating a very tranquil atmosphere. Half a kilometre away is the town of Clermont l’Hérault.

About the Area
The church of Saint-Paul in Clermont l'Hérault
The church of Saint-Paul in Clermont l'Hérault
The centre of Clermont l’Hérault is just a kilometre from the house. The 12th century Château des Guilhem stands at the top of the hill on which this town of 8000 is built. Clermont’s medieval churches include Les Penitents and the church of Saint-Paul.

In the 18th century main square, the town hosts a street market every Wednesday morning, with over a hundred vendors selling a wide range of regional produce including fruit, vegetables, olives, fish, meat and bread.

Lac du Salagou
Lac du Salagou
Clermont has a plenty of shops and services, including a large outdoor pool, a cinema, and several hypermarkets. At the wine collective, visitors can taste the wines of the region.

Seven kilometres from Fontenille is the large Lac du Salagou, a man-made lake which is a popular recreation area. The landscape around the lake is richly characteristic, with basalt columns, canyons, and red soil. Sailing, windsurfing, and mountain biking are among the activities available there.

Less than an hour’s drive will bring you into the Parc National des Cévennes, a great area of preserved nature in the Cévennes mountain range. Its attractions include the famous Aven Armand limestone cave.

Another fascinating cave network is the Grotte de Clamouse, which is open to the public and includes a fast-flowing river and a great variety of unusual rock formations and crystals.

Montpellier (photo: Welland)

Montpellier on the Meditteranean coast is also a short drive. This town, the capital of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, is rich in history, from its medieval university to its 19th century streets.

The beaches of Cap d’Agde are equally easy to reach. Further afield, and ideal for a day trip, is the Roman city of Aix-en-Provence, which was once the seat of the papacy and where the medieval Papal Palace is well worth visiting.
