About the Property
The east side of the house
The east side of the house
Le Grand Jaure is a spacious traditional stone country house in rural Périgord. Built in 1770, the property has been carefully restored to provide all modern amenities while retaining its historical character. Six guests can sleep in three bedrooms, with an additional double bed in the living room if needed.

The house stands in extensive lands on a hilltop surrounded by mature trees and meadows where horses graze. Just beyond are the vineyards of the "Pécharmant" appellation, and guests can buy the wine right next door. The house is in a peaceful rural area and has stunning views of the Périgord countryside. The bilingual owners live in a separate building on the property, and are always happy to help their guests.

The house offers great standard of comfort, and is tastefully decorated and furnished with antiques. All rooms have stone walls and exposed wooden beams in the ceiling.

Entering the house, one comes into the kitchen, which is well equipped with a gas oven and cooking range, a microwave, a refrigerator, and a dishwasher. Adjacent to the kitchen is a spacious dining area, and there is also a bathroom with a shower and toilet on this floor.

The main living area is a large room facing East and South, with a comfortable television lounge and a collection of books. This room also has a sleeping area with a double bed.

From here, a door opens onto the terrace with a table and chairs overlooking the swimming pool and the peaceful countryside beyond. Steps lead down to the pool and the parking area where a barbecue and a tent allow for dining in the shade.

Upstairs are two large bedrooms facing south. Each has a double bed and can take an extra bed if required. These bedrooms enjoy great views of the vineyards and meadows below, and the forests in the distance. A third bedroom is smaller and features attractive beamwork; it has two single beds.

There are two bathrooms on this floor: one is quite large and is equipped with a bathtub, shower and toilet, the second with shower and toilet. A cot and high chair for a baby can be provided. Guests have the use of four bicycles to explore the local roads.

The nearby town of Bergerac is just a couple of minutes away. It has a good range of shops, pharmacies, banks and supermarkets, as well as a number of cafés and bars and excellent restaurants. Most recent movies can be seen in the 7-screen movie theatre.

Every Wednesday and Saturday morning, the town hosts a popular and colourful open air market, with fruits, vegetables, and many different kinds of food on sale.

In the centre of town, the old city dates from the 12th to the 16th century. The narrow flagstoned streets and squares are closed to cars. In this part of town, don't miss the "Cloître des Récollets", which overlooks the Dordogne river.

The Bergerac area is renowned for its vineyards. The wines which come from here include red and white Bergerac, côtes de Bergerac, red Pécharmant, and the sweet whites, Monbazillac and Saussignac - the latter best appreciated with foie gras.

The owners of Le Grand Jaure will be happy to suggest local vineyards to visit, where the wines can be sampled. Just minutes from Bergerac, there are several castles open to visitors. These include the 16th century Château de Monbazillac and its vineyards, the medieval Château de Lanquais, the Château de Montréal, and the Château de Bannes.

About the Region
The château of Beynac
The château of Beynac
Within a 20 minute drive of Le Grand Jaure, is the medieval city of Issigeac, and the fortified bastide of Monpazier, which dates back to the Hundred Years War. Eastwards up the Dordogne river, there's the medieval village of Beynac, which clings to a hillside dominated by a historic castle. Across the valley, there's the Château des Milandes, the Château de Marqueyssac, with its magnificent gardens, and the Château de Castelnaud, which has an impressive exhibition of military equipment from the Hundred Years War. The beautifully restored medieval city of Sarlat is worth a full day trip in itself.
The medieval town of Sarlat

There is a wealth of important prehistoric sites along the Vézère valley: Bara-Bahau, La Madeleine, Les Eyzies, with its superb museum, and the not-to-be-missed Lascaux, site of the famous cave paintings.

The city of Périgueux, which gave its name to the Périgord region, is within a 45 minutes drive from Le Grand Jaure. There are lots of great shops in Périgueux's pedestrian area, as well as plenty of interesting architectural heritage from Roman and medieval times. St Emilion is 60 kilometres west of Bergerac, en route to Libourne and Bordeaux. It's a great place to take a picnic under the "Tour du Roy" - ideally accompanied by a St Emilion Grand Cru from one of the numerous wine shops to be found in this medieval city.

Guest Opinions

We have had a wonderful 3 weeks here. Apart from the fantastic weather you organised, you have been most kind and wonderful hosts. The gite and its idyllic surrounds are more than we could have imagined. It has been a truly relaxing escape and a memorable holiday.
Greg & Glenda P. - Mosman, Australia

This was such a lovely environment to relax in, share meals with our friends, relax around the pool or stroll along the country roads in the neighbourhood. Its proximity to Bergerac wineries, the Dordogne River and all it has to offer, all make this a place we hope to return to in coming years. And your hospitality to us was unsurpassed during our entire trip. Thanks for making this a wonderful introduction to France for us!
Brian & Sharon W. - Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

I want to let you know that our stay at Grand Jaure was one of the most satisfying of our lives. The early morning haze over the vineyards, the flowers in your beautiful garden and the walks along the hilly lanes were magical times for us. Our guests who joined us were as enchanted as we were and we reminisce about different things we did each time we see each other.
Floy & Ken R. - Texas, USA

Le Grand Jaure is a very special home that exceeded our expectations. The feeling you have from the moment you pull into the drive at Le Grand Jaure...being greeted by Vonik and Christian, as well as the roosters, the family dog, the donkey and horse, makes you realize you have come to a magical place. The view from both the patio and poolside will make you feel like you are the owners of your own French vineyard. The owners, Vonik and Christian are a charming couple who enhanced our stay with their hospitality, and provided us with all the information we wanted regarding the local sights and the history of the property. It was a perfect vacation for everyone in the family. Our biggest complaint was that one week wasnt enough! We look forward to our next stay.
Deborah & Bryan G. - MA, USA

We were pleasantly surprised at the house’s spaciousness, the quality of the furnishings and the maintenance of the pool and large grounds around it. All was first class and we felt very much at home. We enjoyed our three weeks with you, and felt so good we could have stayed all summer!
