Welcome to
La Digue
A bright, finely renovated 19th century house with two terraces, in the winemaking village of Saint-Chinian, close to the Haut-Languedoc Natural Park.
The living / dining room
La Digue is a distinctive 19th century house located on a quiet, narrow street shaded by plane trees in the lively wine producing village of St Chinian. Recently renovated, the house is spacious, light and airy, with two double bedrooms and a twin bedroom. The house has two large terraces leading to the shaded back garden which overlooks the Vernazobre River, the surrounding vineyards, and the foothills of the Haut Languedoc National Park. It’s an ideal base from which to explore the Languedoc and the Mediterranean in a tranquil village atmosphere.
The kitchen
Entering the house from the street, the living/ dining room is comfortably furnished and has a telephone and stereo for guests. Sofas and easy chairs surround the decorative traditional Languedoc fireplace, exposed wooden beams line the ceiling, and an antique armoire stands in the corner. French doors open onto the upper terrace, from which a flight of steps leads down into the garden. The terrace has a table, chairs, and a sun umbrella – it’s an ideal spot for outdoor meals. Eating indoors is always an option too – the dining table seats six and connects directly to the kitchen, which is decorated in bright Mediterranean colours and is fully equipped with a gas stovetop, an electric oven, a dishwasher, a coffee maker, and a kettle.
Dining out on the terrace
There’s also a second living room on the lower ground floor, which has a TV with a DVD player and a satellite receiver, featuring English-language channels. This room remains cool throughout the day, and opens directly onto a shady lower terrace leading into the garden. There's also a shower room on the lower ground floor, as well as the laundry room, which has a washing machine and a tumble dryer, and a separate storeroom with a large fridge/freezer.
The house has three bedrooms. One bedroom is on the upper ground floor, and has a pair of single beds. Upstairs is a bedroom with a double bed and a bathroom, and finally, on the top floor is another double bedroom and a bathroom.

The Vernazobre river, which runs close to the house
La Digue is a good base from which to discover the character and history of the Languedoc. From the house, guests can take a stroll in the nearby vineyards, or swim in a natural pool of the clear Vernazobre river, a short walk from the front door. The village square in the centre of St-Chinian is close by, and hosts a busy, colourful market every Sunday and Thursday morning, selling regional produce, groceries, clothes and souvenirs. St-Chinian has a good range of shops and services: there are five restaurants and bars, as well as bakers, butchers, grocery shops and newsstands within a short walk from the house.
The nearby town of Roquebrun
There are also three banks with ATMs in the village, a hairdresser, a doctor, and a large supermarket with a petrol station on the outskirts. The newly constructed library, in the restored former abbey, has a number of computer terminals for internet access. There are plenty of recreational facilities nearby, including tennis courts, an open-air swimming pool, and bike rental facilities. St-Chinian was founded by Benedictine monks during the reign of emperor Charlemagne in 794, and has had a long history. The village church has a beautiful 17th century organ, which was recently restored and is regularly used for concerts. Visitors shouldn’t miss the chance to climb to the chapel of Notre-Dame de Nazareth on a rock outside the village, which has unforgettable views of the valley in which Saint-Chinian is situated.
The medieval cloisters in Béziers
Saint-Chinian is nestled in the foothills between the Montagne Noire and the Cévennes. There are a number of Mediterranean seaside towns within a 40 minute drive, and the lakes and forests of the Haut Languedoc National Park are a short distance away.
Within less than an hour’s drive, there are lakes, caves, gorges, dolmens, cathedrals, abbeys, châteaux, and some of the most beautiful villages in France. The ancient Roman road, the Via Domitia, crosses the region, and there are fortified villages and castles from the medieval Cathar period throughout Languedoc.
A lock on the Canal du Midi
The 17th century Canal du Midi runs nearby, connecting the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, and is always pleasant to walk or cycle alongside. Further afield, there are the beautiful cities of Montpellier, Toulouse and Perpignan, and the historic fortress of Carcassonne.
The opportunities for leisure pursuits are almost infinite: walking, hiking, rock-climbing, swimming, canoeing, cycling, golf, tennis, fishing, wine-tasting, and the traditional game of Pétanque. Gourmets and wine-lovers will be delighted in Languedoc-Roussillon, with a wide variety of fascinating traditional dishes and an even bigger selection of distinguished wines to be discovered.

From a woman’s point of view La Digue was like home away from home! Especially so when you have children. It’s so important for them to feel at home.
