La Jassine is a Provençal-style two-storey villa, set in an acre (half a hectare) of private land with a swimming pool and tennis court, in the Luberon Regional Nature Park. The property enjoys a tranquil setting amid vineyards, olive groves, and orchards, with excellent views of the Luberon Mountains and the spectacular sunsets. Six to eight guests can sleep in three bedrooms, with an additional double bed in the office.

Behind the house, a sheltered, south-facing terrace off the living/dining room is the perfect place for breakfast or a romantic dinner. From the terrace, a few steps lead up to the 4x8 metre pool, surrounded by a deck with teak loungers, and bordered by a small garden with herbs, lavender, and a variety of flowers and shrubs. Oak trees and a grove of olive and fruit trees provide shade.

Inside the house, the traditionally-styled kitchen is fully equipped for aspiring chefs and features rustic oak cabinets, a terracotta countertop, and a typical beamed ceiling. The large kitchen window gives a spectacular view of the mountains.

The focal point of the open concept living/dining area is a traditional hearth with a high efficiency wood-burning fireplace. French doors lead directly out onto the terrace. A TV with a satellite receiver gets a multitude of international channels, and has a DVD and VCR attached.

From the living room, a winding sandstone staircase leads to the large second-floor office and library. A sliding picture window offers a breathtaking view of the Luberon Mountains. An antique desk in front of the window provides a place to enjoy the landscape while reading or writing. At one end of the office area is a double bed, a couch, and a daybed for overnight guests. Guests can enjoy a selection of English and French books, local guides, toys, and games. A doorway leads from the second floor onto a terrace at the front of the villa that overlooks the Luberon Mountains. It is an ideal spot for watching the sun set while enjoying the local wine or for stargazing.

The three bedrooms are on ground level, and all are well supplied with closet space. The master bedroom features a solid teak bed with a Chinese headboard, and looks onto the terrace and the pool from large windows on two walls.

The second bedroom has a pair of single beds, while the third bedroom has a double bed with a view of the tennis court. The airy, bright bathroom features a long vanity unit with two sinks and a tub with a hand shower. There is also a separate shower room with a sink.

La Jassine is close to a multitude of small picturesque villages, which offer fine restaurants, fascinating historical sites, and outstanding entertainment. The village of Vaugines, with its Renaissance buildings and beautiful Romanesque church, is just a kilometer from the house. Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources were filmed in and around the area. The village of Lourmarin, four kilometers from the house, is officially one of the most beautiful villages in France. It is dominated by its medieval and Renaissance château. The medieval village of Cucuron, with its 13th century ramparts, gates, and towers, is only three kilometers away.

The Luberon is dotted with many picturesque villages, each with its own unique charm and lively market. Among the many others that are within a few kilometers of La Jassine are Ansouis, crowned by its castle that has been the residence of the Dukes of Sabran Pontèves for over one thousand years, and Cadenet, dominated by the ruins of an 11th century castle.

The many picturesque village markets, antique dealers, and boutiques offer a shoppers’ paradise. The villa is also close to many fine restaurants that offer a wide variety of cuisine. The village of Lourmarin alone has over a dozen restaurants, including the acclaimed Auberge La Fenière and the Moulin de Lourmarin. The Auberge de la Loube at Buoux is located in a picturesque setting close to the Fort of Buoux.

Wine-tasting in the many vineyards that produce the Côtes du Luberon wine is a popular pastime. For the more active, the Luberon offers many excellent hiking, biking, and nature trails. The Luberon mountain range is divided from north to south. To the west, the Petit Luberon forms a plateau carved by gorges and ravines. To the east the Grand Luberon has massive summits, the highest being Mourre Nègre. Other nearby sports include swimming, tennis, rock climbing, golf, and horseback riding.

In addition to its natural beauty, Provence is a flourishing cultural region. The area hosts a number of well-known music and theatre festivals, including the Festival d’Avignon, the International Music Festival in Aix-en-Provence, and La Roque-d’Anthéron Piano Festival. There is a rich selection of theatre, concerts, art exhibitions, and other cultural activities, many of which are held outdoors in historical sites. Famous artists and writers of the region include Van Gogh, Cézanne, Bosco, Giono, Pagnol, and Camus.

The sightseeing possibilities are endless, including Roman ruins, the perched villages of the Luberon, castles, abbeys, churches, museums, and wineries. Throughout the Luberon mountain range are many excellent hiking, biking, and nature trails, as well as picturesque sites for picnics or watching the sunset. An hour’s drive or less from the villa are countless sites of historical or cultural interest. The lively town of Apt is the site of one of Provence’s most popular markets on Saturdays. Aix-en-Provence, the beautiful old capital of the region, is an elegant city with many fountains and old mansions. It is the site of Cézanne’s studio and the Vasarely Foundation. Arles was a Roman capital and is famous for its well-preserved Gallo-Roman ruins, including an amphitheatre where bullfights and Provençal festivals are still held.

The city of Avignon is the site of the medieval Papal Palace and the celebrated Bridge of Avignon. It is also the site of the world-renowned Festival d’Avignon in the summer, when the streets become filled with actors and theatre-goers from around the world. An hour’s drive will take you to the Mediterranean coast and the busy fishing port and beaches of Cassis, as well as the breathtaking ridges of the Calanques. The Old Port of Marseille boasts over 25 centuries of history, and is the site of many excellent seafood restaurants. Among the many other sites within an hour of the villa are Gordes, the ochre cliffs of Roussillon, Les Beaux, and the salt marshes of the Camargue.

We’ve had a marvelous year at La Jassine, one of the greatest and most enjoyable adventures of our lives. We feel extremely fortunate to have been able to live in your wonderful house in the Luberon.
