The living room
The living room
This restored two storey stone house is situated in the tiny hamlet of La Martinière. There is also on the site a large barn and pigeonnier that date from the 18th century. On each level are two large bedroooms and a separate bathroom to comfortably sleep up to eight guests.

There is a large terrace on one side of the house and an enclosed garden on the other side leading to a hectare (two acres) of grounds with open grassy areas and mature trees. The property is surrounded by local farms and vineyards and has a panoramic view over the district.

The living room has a large stone fireplace, a sofa and comfortable lounge chairs, with a sound system and a television with a DVD player which receives English-language satellite channels.

The dining room has a large table with seating for eight to ten guests. The kitchen is well equipped with a large gas stove and a dishwasher. Both the living and dining rooms have French doors leading directly out into the garden.

A covered terrace off the kitchen has a barbecue and dining table. There is also a dining setting near the pigeonnier under the shade of a spreading tree.

The house is sunny and bright with scenic views from all rooms. On the ground floor are a bathroom and two double bedrooms.

Upstairs is another double bedroom, and a bedroom with two single beds under the sloping roof. All rooms get plenty of natural light. Beneath the house is a traditional French cave or wine cellar.

It will define your rights and obligations as a guest in a rental property. Your rental agreement should state:

  • the name and the exact address of the property
  • the name of the homeowner and his or her phone number
  • the name of the tenant and his or her address and phone number

  • the rent amount and what it includes (linen, towels, cleaning, electricity, water…) as well as what it excludes (heat, wood for the fireplace?…)

The house is set in a quiet and private location within a two kilometre walk of the village of Chanterac. The village has a boulangerie and a small supermarket.

A little further is a restaurant and bar at Saint-Germain-du-Salombre and the town of Saint-Astier with many restaurants, a cinema, a large supermarket, banks and other amenities.

A local market
There are historic churches, chateaux, and Roman ruins in the surrounding area. The area abounds in local markets selling fresh produce, which take place in surrounding small towns on every day of the week. The largest market in the Dordgne happens in Saint-Astier, and remains very traditional and popular with the locals.

A forest adjoins La Martiniere on one side of the property with peaceful and scenic walking and cycling tracks.

There are forests, lakes and the l'Isle river within five kilometres, where activities available include canoeing, kayaking, fishing, walking, climbing and cycling.

Within 40 minutes of the property is the town of Brantôme, locally known as the Venice of the Dordogne, featuring many cultural and historical sights and activities. Brantome's market is every Friday. Visitors of all ages enjoy canoeing the calm waters of the river Dronne.

Also worth exploring are prehistoric caves close by, the Bergerac wine region, and the old town of Périgueux. It boasts historic architecture and major Roman ruins including an amphitheatre and the storied Domus of Vesunna, an ancient manor house.

Sarlat and Saint-Émillion are famous and picturesque French towns which are ideal for a day trip. They both feature medieval buildings, Rennaisance architecture and historic churches, as well as shops, restaurants and other amenities for families to enjoy.
