About the Property
The large 20 metre pool with spring water
The large 20 metre pool with spring water
La Romaine is a large house constructed in 1830 and renovated in the 1960s, which has earned a four star rating from the regional Tourism bureau. Its large masonry walls keep it cool during the summer months. The four bedrooms on the ground floor accommodate up to eight guests comfortably.

This is the only house in the centre of the ancient town of Vaison-la-Romaine which has a large back garden, home to a variety of trees and fragrant plants. The garden is walled for privacy and gives a view of the Château des Comtes de Toulouse and the bell tower of the 12th century cathedral. The house was formerly owned and lived in by Maurice Burrus, a successful industrialist, senator, and patron of the arts, who devoted much of his time and fortune to archaeological research in Vaison-la-Romaine. Thanks to him, an ancient theatre and many Roman villas were discovered in the town.

Vaison is a medieval village, but its ancestry goes back to Roman times. The village is surrounded by vineyards of the Côte du Rhône, and many cellars offer tastings of their products. The renowned cookbook author and journalist Patricia Wells runs her cooking school from this town. The rolling hills are crisscrossed by numerous well-maintained small roads (départementales) that make it a pleasure to explore the area on a bicycle.

Further away is the famed Mont Ventoux, a landmark of the Tour de France, and an enduring source of fascination for artistes. It has been registered by UNESCO as a World Heritage site because of its its unique geography and the wealth of its flora and fauna.

About the Region
Les Dentelles de Montmirail
Les Dentelles de Montmirail
Recreational cycling is a favourite activity around Vaison, as is rock-climbing at the Dentelles de Montmirail, where a number of routes of varying difficulty attract experts as well as beginners. The town is surrounded not only by vineyards, but also by olive groves and lavender fields that stretch as far as the eye can see, offering countless possibilities for strolling, walking, riding or driving.

The cultural wealth of the region acts as a beacon. Avignon's world-renowned Theatre Festival showcases more than 4,000 plays during the summer months. But there are also countless music, opera, and dance performances throughout the region, in particular in the ancient Roman theatres of Orange, Nîmes and Arles.

Guest Opinions

Returning here was like coming home. We enjoyed this visit perhaps even more than previously because we now feel very comfortable in the villa, in the town and in the entire region. It is perhaps an indication of our pleasure that our grandson, now eight years old, cried when it was time to leave. We hope to return next year or perhaps the year after that.

We had a wonderful time in Vaison La Romaine. The accomodations was perfect for our family. We loved the little town and were amazed by the market on Tuesday. It was amazing to be in the middle of such old world history. It was a treat to relax next to the beautiful pool. My favorite part was sitting out on the patio after dinner in the evening with my family. I will definitely recommend La Romaine to my friends, and I do hope we can return in a couple of years.
