About the Holiday Home

The living and dining area
The living and dining area
Le Guillaume is a four-room apartment in a 16th century stone building, in the heart of the richly historic city of Bayeux in Lower Normandy. The three-storey building has a steep tiled roof and exposed stone walls, and stands amid the narrow, picturesque streets in the Cathedral Square in the centre of Bayeux. In the picture above, the apartment building is in the centre, with the cathedral in the foreground. A stone spiral staircase leads up to the apartment on the second floor. The four rooms are exceptionally light and airy. Despite its medieval setting, it is very modern, comfortable, and quiet, with electric heating and double glazing.

The living area has polished wooden floors, exposed wooden beams, and exposed stonework on either side of the cast-iron Victorian fireplace. Two large windows look over the rooftops of old Bayeux. The room is furnished with a sofa which converts to a double bed, a pair of dining chairs, a folding mahogany table, a nest of coffee tables, and a writing desk. For relaxation, there’s a monitor with a VCR, a selection of English speaking films, (no reception for french TV), and a CD / radio / cassette player.

A breakfast bar divides the living room from the kitchen, which is decorated in blue and white Italian ceramic tiles. The kitchen is fully equipped: there’s a large fridge with a freezer compartment, a twin electric stovetop, a full-sized electric oven, a built in microwave, a built in dishwasher, a stainless steel sink and plenty of built-in cupboard space. A window overlooks the cobbled streets and the square in front of Bayeux Cathedral.

The bedroom is decorated in pinks and whites. There’s a large double bed, with bedside tables on either side, an antique pine dressing table, and a built-in wardrobe. The floor is again polished wood, and the window overlooks the surrounding medieval houses and cobbled streets.

The bathroom adjoins the bedroom and has a spacious and striking walk-in shower, a toilet and a basin. The floor is in blue and white Italian tiles, with mirrors and storage units on the walls.

About the Area

The famous old water mill in central Bayeux
The famous old water mill in central Bayeux
Bayeux is a town with many layers of history: it was founded by the Romans in the 4th century, became an important centre in the middle ages, and was the first town liberated by the Allies in World War 2. There are lots of interesting things just outside the front door, starting with Bayeux’s famous 13th century Gothic cathedral. On this same street, there are many artists’ studios and makers of handcrafted jewellery. There are several restaurants at hand, serving very good cuisine, offering excellent value and good service.
The British Cemetery, about a 10 minute walk from the apartment
The British Cemetery, about a 10 minute walk from the apartment
The marketplace is five minutes’ walk, and hosts a craft market every Wednesday, and a fruit and vegetable market on Saturday. The famous Bayeux Tapestry, which illustrates the Norman invasion of England in 1066, is also just a five minute walk, while another ten minutes will bring the visitor to the British War Cemetery.

There are plenty of other activities available locally, with tennis courts, gymnasiums, and a large public swimming pool all within easy walking distance.

About the Region

The beach at Arromanche
The beach at Arromanche
Just outside of Bayeux, there is lots more to see. All of the D-Day landing beaches are within a short drive; it’s just twenty minutes to Omaha Beach, for example. The American Cemetery at Omaha is a spectacular and moving place to visit. Omaha also has a 27-hole golf course of international repute, and the club house there welcomes all visitors, golfers and otherwise.

About an hour away is the beautiful region of Suisse Normande, with its rolling hills and quaint towns such as Thury Harcourt and Clecy.

The International Golf Club at Omaha Beach

Also worth a visit are the towns of Deauville and Trouville, and the little fishing village of Port en Bessin, which has many excellent sea-food restaurants. Port en Bessin has a fish market on most days of the week. There are many forests around which are ideal for exploring on foot; alternatively, bikes can be rented and horseriding is also available.

Winters in Normandy are mild, and the summers are warm. It’s a pleasant temperate place to visit, full of interest at any time of year.

Guest Opinions

The charm, the hospitality, the location, the tidiness, the decor of this home is a treasure. Reading here in the afternoon and hearing French choir music outside my window mad me feel very at home. The Church bells on Sundays were truly special!

Le Guillaume has been our cosy home base for 3 nights - we wish we could stay longer! This apartment is lovely and comfortable... we were spoiled by the gift basket and all the delightful "creature comforts" for cooking and relaxing... It was also very nice to walk to the wonderful local restaurants - we enjoyed Le Petit Bistro, Le Pommier and Le Rapiere. Heartfelt thanks!

We spent a week here to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary, and had a wonderful week. Lovely apartment! We felt very at home here and will come back again. We had a superb meal at L'assiette Normande, just up "la rue". Sunny days have been good to us, visiting all the D Day beaches.

It was such a delight to arrive in Bayeux to find ourselves welcomed by your lovely apartment- not to mention the "welcome basket" itself, which was totally unexpected. Your renovation has been perfect - such attention to detail - nothing overlooked. We looked forward at the end of each day to returning to the warmth and ambience ot the apartment and its very efficient heating system. Congratulations!
