About the Property
The view from the terrace and jacuzzi
The view from the terrace and jacuzzi
This detached house is located in the highest position of this typical Provencal village commanding impressive views on all sides. There is a Jacuzzi spa built into the large, private terrace, with views up into the Luberon foothills. The house is located at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, overlooking gardens and fields on three sides and peeking over the village rooftops on the other. This is a bright and airy house, simply decorated and furnished with subtle Provençal touches.
The living room
The living room
Built above two shell-encrusted caves, the house is entered via stone-arched doors which lead to an antique Provençal entrance door. The terracotta-tiled hallway leads up a stairway with a pretty wrought-iron balustrade into the main living area. The spacious master bedroom includes a fitted closet and old pine dresser. French windows open to a wonderful view down onto the village. The en-suite bathroom includes a shower, toilet and vanity unit with basin.

The fully-equipped open kitchen is cleverly built into a corner of the dining area from which steps lead up under a stone archway into the cathedral-ceilinged living room with open fireplace and relaxed seating. Three large, specially-designed windows have been installed to air the living room in the summer, providing unobstructed views out across the valley towards the Château of Ansouis and the Mont St Victoire, 40kms away.

The plunge pool / jacuzzi

From the living room, an open staircase leads up to a wrought-iron balustraded mezzanine to access the terrace through a huge glass picture window. The mezzanine then leads off via a small single bedroom to the bathroom and double or twin bedroom beyond, all with built-in closet space.

The terrace is furnished with a teak dining table and chairs and sun loungers plus a barbecue. The plunge pool/jacuzzi on the terrace is delightfully refreshing on hot days and can be heated for star gazing by night or on cooler days.

On the ground floor there is a double/twin bedroom and ensuite bathroom, plus a small cloakroom/utility room, with a new washing machine and dryer.

The boiler room, which is only accessible from outside the house, can be used for storing bicycles and other sports equipment. We provide three bicycles for tenants' use. The garage will take one small car. There is also parking space immediately outside the property.

About the Area
Fountain in the village square
Fountain in the village square
Vaugines, situated on the Route des Châteaux, is a small typically Provençal village nestling in the Luberon foothills. Its famous Roman church and other parts of the village were featured in the films "Jean de Florette" and "Manon des Sources". A cooling, moss-covered fountain sits in the tiny village square surrounded by a café, restaurant, grocery store and the City Hall. A boulodrome, popular with the locals, is located next to the Roman church. The nearby villages of Cucuron (2.5km) and Lourmarin (5km) offer great cafés, restaurants and shops. The village is surrounded by fields and woods and offers several mapped hiking trails around the area. Swimming is possible at a nearby camp site or in natural pools a few kilometres away.
About the Region
Vaugines nestling in the Luberon foothills
Vaugines nestling in the Luberon foothills
The Luberon region is blessed with a pleasant Mediterranean climate. Its pretty Provençal villages in this unique rural area offer visitors an infinite variety of colourful and fragrant landscapes which have inspired generations of artists, writers and filmmakers. There are many interesting places to visit nearby, such as the ancient spa town of Aix-en-Provence – a city rich in ancient monuments, galleries, and museums, as well as great shops and markets and the famous fountains and street cafés along the Cour Mirabeau. Other interesting places to visit within a short drive include Apt, Avignon, the Camargue, Gordes, the Gorges of the Verdon River, Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Marseilles, Roussillon, the Sainte Victoire mountain, and the Mediterranean coastal resorts.

This is a great base for those wishing to attend the summer music festivals at Aix, Orange, Avignon and La Roque d'Antheron. Weekly markets in many of the villages offer a range of delicious local specialities such as wines, olives and olive oils, goats cheeses, truffles (in winter), plants and fresh fruits and delicious locally-grown fruits and vegetables as well as lavender products and arts and crafts such as pottery, basketry and Provençal fabrics and linens.

Many villages also put on excellent local fairs and cultural events to entertain their summer visitors. Whether you enjoy relaxing, eating wonderful food, hiking, biking, horse-riding, swimming, or exploring historic towns and villages, this region offers it all!

Guest Opinions

My sincere thanks for an absolutely delightful week in Provence.Your place was absolutely perfect, the sunsets from the terrace divine, the village idyllic, the markets scrumptious and we are still in re-entry shock…. We certainly will be recommending your house to others interested in traveling in Provence.
Pete J - Arlington, VA, USA

I just wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know how much we enjoyed Les Aires. It's an absolutely beautiful house, in a lovely village. We had a very pleasant stay, and found the "red book" recommendations of restaurants, bike rentals, etc. very helpful.
Edward S - Los Angeles, CA, USA

Your charming Provence home was just right for us! A market a day and a wonderful lunch was just the way for us to relax. You must have spent a great deal of time and energy to make this home so fine. Thanks.
Joel S - Burke, VA, USA

We had a great stay - your house was wonderful base to explore this great area of Provence. We really appreciated your ideas for restaurants and trips and can see that you could obviously spend lots of time in this area.
Vanessa S - London, UK

We thoroughly enjoyed your place... We had a great time. The house was very comfortable, everything worked and the views are fantastic! The location is great too. We will definitely recommend your place to our friends.

My husband, son and I had a terrific time at Les Aires. The town is quite wonderful and you did a beautiful job of your house. From an architectural standpoint, I thoroughly enjoyed all the issues you addresssed within the design to create a wonderful space with especially spectacular views. The views from each window were like ever changing works of art.
Heather B - Setauket, NY, USA

We all had a fantastic time on holiday, particularly the fête over our second weekend in Vaugines! It was so wonderful joining in with all the locals dancing by the fountain. It is such a beautiful area and we will certainly recommend it to our friends. We all have amazing memories of our time spent in Provence. As for 'Les Aires' - we couldn't have asked for more. Thank you.

We will hold closely in our hearts vivid memories of our stay at Les Aires – enjoying a glass of wine sitting on the terrace with a cooling breeze in the late afternoon; being awakened by the rich and melodic tones of the town bell just outside our window; quietly enjoying the sunset looking over the rooftops of Vaugines toward the chateau at Ansouis – all of this has enriched our lives and we are forever grateful for the experience.
Albert A. - Minnesota, USA

We had a wonderful honeymoon at Les Aires which was in no small part down to how well organised things were and how much useful information you provided. Thanks for all your help; maybe one day well be back.
Ben G. - Brighton, UK

I am sitting here gazing out your windows on a scene that is so tranquil and beautiful I feel as if I am in the middle of a prodigious painting... We have been charmed by your home and the mountain villages we explored. However, we also leave with renewed spirits and memories to cherish. Hopefully, we can return again some day for this is truly a special place that touches the heart. Thank you for making us feel so welcome with the basket of goodies, the cherries, and the phone call.
Tamora B. - Columbus, Ohio, USA

We had an absolutely wonderful holiday and couldnt think of a nicer place to stay. Your house was lovely and well equipped to cater for all possible needs. We spent a good deal of time travelling out to the local towns, vineyards and the Camargue. It is a lovely area. It was extremely helpful and thoughtful of you to have brochures, books and maps in the house. We have already recommended your house to other friends and family.
