La Maison de Martel is a finely-restored home in the medieval heart of the village from which it takes its name, in the richly historic Dordogne region. The house faces south and gets plenty of sunlight all day long. Up to six guests can stay in two double bedrooms and one twin bedroom.

The house is built around a cosy, lushly planted courtyard, where guests can dine outdoors. From here, steps lead up to the entrance. Inside, the house is tastefully decorated and richly furnished with antiques and contemporary pieces.

About the Area

A medieval courtyard in Martel
A medieval courtyard in Martel
The medieval village of Martel is known for its seven towers. Its cobblestoned streets are full of history, with many superb examples of medieval houses, public buildings, and a magnificent 18th century hall on the plaza. During the middle ages, Martel was the administrative capital for the viscount of Turenne, and was occupied by the English for a period during the Hundred Years War.

Martel has a good range of shops and services for all everyday needs, as well as a choice of restaurants and cafés to enjoy the excellent regional cuisine.

About the Region

The old lavabo or washhouse in Martel
The old lavabo or washhouse in Martel
Martel lies in the heart of the Dordogne region, and there are many interesting places to visit nearby, including the flawlessly-preserved medieval town of Sarlat; the village of Rocamadour, built on a cliffside and home to a lively artistic scene; and the town of Collonges-la-Rouge, where the buildings are made of a local red stone. The region has many layers of history, going all the way back to the cave paintings in Lascaux and continuing through medieval castles and fortified villages. Many sports and activities are available, including rock climbing, canoeing, and fishing, and there are plenty of good rural trails to explore by foot or on a bike.
