2 The Tobacco Barn|Rental information

The Tobacco Barn
The Tobacco Barn
The Tobacco Barn is the largest of the four converted outbuildings. There are two double bedrooms, each with its own ensuite shower room, and a third bedroom upstairs, also with an ensuite shower room. The barn is tastefully furnished throughout with English and French antiques. The living room features a Perigordine stone fireplace with a wood burning stove for cooler evenings, natural stone walls, and a beamed ceiling. Guests can also enjoy satellite (freeview) TV and DVD. A traditional kitchen offers all of the necessary facilities to cook up the local specialities from the markets. An electric fan oven, gas hob, microwave and dishwasher all make life so much easier when self catering.
The Tobacco Barn: The living room
The Tobacco Barn: The living room
The living room leads directly to the pool terrace where guests can barbecue, wine and dine in the wooden gazebo at the side of the pool, whilst enjoying the wonderful views of the valley and the prehistoric site, La Roque-St-Christophe.

For groups of up to ten, an excellent alternative to the Main House is to take the Tobacco Barn along with the other three one-bedroom cottages - the Hay Barn, the Walnut Store, and La Roque Terrasse. The four units are self-contained but joined together, and offer good privacy, with the pool and terrace reserved for the sole use of the cottages.

Accommodates: 5 guests
Bedrooms: Three bedrooms: two, each with a double bed, one with double and a single bed. All bedrooms have en-suite shower rooms. Different rates available for 2/3, 6/7 guests outside July and August.

About the Area

The prehistoric settlement of La Roque St Christophe
The prehistoric settlement of La Roque St Christophe
Many local towns offer traditional street markets. Montignac in particular hosts an excellent market twice a week, and nearby Rouffignac has a splendid Sunday morning market, where local farmers exhibit freshly picked vegetables, plump ducklings, fresh foie gras, and enormous selections of local cheeses. There are many excellent local restaurants. La Soleil d'Or in Montignac has a reputation for offering gourmet dishes of the highest standard in very relaxed surroundings.

Opposite Les Granges (just ten minutes walk away) is the famous prehistoric village of Le Roque St Christophe – a limestone cliff face, containing many caves which were inhabited for over 55,000 years, from the prehistoric era up to the middle ages when over 5,000 people lived on the site.

The local town of Montignac

Many sports are available locally, including cycling, canoeing, walking, golfing and swimming. Le Manoir des Granges is close to the Vézère river, and for a perfect summer’s day, rent a canoe at nearby Montignac, and paddle downstream to the village of St Leon sur Vézère, which has an ancient church and a fairytale chateau built on the banks of the river itself. After a picnic lunch or a visit to one of the local restaurants, continue your journey to Le Roc St Christophe, then continue downstream visiting the little towns and villages, until the rendezvous with the canoe operators, who can return you to Montignac.

About the Region

Canoeing on the river Vézère
Canoeing on the river Vézère
The Dordogne region is full of interesting history. Nearby places that must be seen include the medieval town of Sarlat, the vibrant city of Perigueux, and many traditional villages, each with a character of their own.

For more ancient history, Le Manoir des Granges is just fifteen minutes from Lascaux, famous for its cave paintings, and also nearby is the village of Les Eyzies, an important site of prehistoric human remains. Everyone who comes to visit says that one week is never enough, two weeks is better, but they always need to come back to the area again because there is so much to see and do!

The view from Forte Reignac
The view from Forte Reignac
The nearby Chateau de Castelnaud houses a museum of medieval weaponry and, at just a half hour’s drive away, is well worth a visit. Equally close is Chateau de Beynac, which is situated on top of a hill protecting the town of Beynac below. From the chateau, the view over the surrounding landscape is stunning.

Also worth visiting is the 16th Century Chateau de Losse, which dominates the Vézère valley, and Manoir d'Eyrignac, which has been maintained by the same family for several centuries and is renowned for its beautiful gardens.

Guest Opinions

We were extremely pleased with the house from the moment we arrived. The exterior of the house is gorgeously maintained. The yard is fully enclosed which allowed the kids to play freely without us worrying about them wandering off. The interior of the house is charming, comfortable and very well maintained. So, all in all, out stay here exceeded our expectations and I am sure if we visit Dordogne again this is the only place we will think to stay.

In June 2014 a group of eight of us enjoyed a week in the main house at Le Manoir des Granges. It suited us perfectly and we used all six bedrooms, which are very comfortable and well equipped, as is the rest of this lovely house. There was so much to see and do in fact, the house was so comfortable, and Paul and Philippa so welcoming and helpful, that we have just booked in again for another week next June, and we can’t wait!

We stayed in the Haybarn for five nights in April 2014 whilst house hunting in the area. The gite was comfortable, very clean, well appointed and delightfully situated. Our hosts were welcoming and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The setting - within sight of the Roque St Christophe and the Rivere Vezere - is impressive, the surrounding area peaceful and beautiful. Montignac is close by and a lovely town and there are numerous pretty villages and good restaurants in the vicinity.

Apart from your extraordinarily nice hosts Paul and Philippa, what makes this place stand out is its location right at the center of a region that is incredibly rich in historic and prehistoric sites. It is very much worth visiting. Countless other sites lie within less than an hour’s driving distance, among them the famous Lascaux caves.
Maik and Petra - Germany

We spent five nights at the Haybarn and thoroughly enjoyed our time. The cottage is spacious and well equipped for a self catering holiday. Paul and Philippa are warm and generous hosts who gave us some very good advice about local attractions and restaurants. We highly recommend this property.

This is a great location with plenty of space for all generations to be free to do their own thing and come and go as they wished, yet retaining the essence of togetherness for an extended family holiday or event. We will certainly go again, and hopefully so will the grandchildren and our relations.
Mike R. - England

The gite was spacious, comfortable and nicely decorated. Everything we needed was provided. The location was close to all of the medieval castles, rivers and other sites we were interested in. The prehistoric caves could be seen from the gite. We feel our stay was even better than anticipated in every way!

We stayed at The Haybarn for the last two weeks of June and it was everything we were hoping for. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel at home and very welcome by our hosts, who were very generous with their time and answered many of our questions on things to do.Many thanks, and we hope to return.

Philippa and Paul were incredibly friendly and hospitable. The property was in a perfect location with a fantastic view of the Rock (St Christophe). We stayed in the Tobacco Barn, which is beautifully renovated, the home was very comfortable and convenient for seeing the local sites.

We arrived after a long plane journey from Canada, plus a car ridefrom Bordeaux and were exhausted, but our spirits were truly liftedwhen we got to the Tobacco Barn. We have rented a good number of gites in France over many years, but this one was the best ever. Itwas so bright and clean even in a dark March evening, and the welcome we got from Paul and Philippa just added to our pleasure.
Maureen and Jim - Ontario, Canada

We had a thoroughly enjoyable and energetic holiday, based in this beautiful and very comfortable gite. Paul and Philippa were perfect hosts, providing whatever we needed, and the local sites were a pleasure to visit.

We had the feeling we would be happy during our second stay in the Hay Barn. We were greeted with a bottle of local wine and a bowl brimming with walnuts from the property. Everything was super clean, the bed was very comfortable and every amenity needed for a week-long rental was on hand.
Catherine and Bill S. - Concord, California, USA

We had a wonderful two weeks embracing the ’Perigord Noir’ features - eating walnuts and duck, visiting castles and caves and enjoying the wonderful scenery. Our stay was a great value for money.
Chris and Elise - Stockport, UK

We enjoyed Sarlat and the market at Le Bugue, also food a La Source in Tursac, the Auberge in Le Moustier. Our highlight was the magnificent stag that appeared one early morning and sauntered past the gite. We will definitely be back!
Mac and Elaine - East Sussex, UK

A wonderful two weeks in La Roque, best holiday so far in France. Highlights for us were the wonderful walks from the house and the Sarlat market on Saturday. Thanks so much to Paul and Philippa, they really are the best of hosts.
Brendan and Mary - Ireland

A very beautiful place, cosy and warm atmosphere. And also it is located ideally, near the river Vezere in front of Roque St Christophe and also next to the magnificant village St Leon sur Vezere. Philippa and Paul, thank you very much for you kindess, we really felt at home in your place!

Just returned from a long October weekend staying in Le Roque Terrasse and we have nothing but happy memories. The gite is light, clean and spacious, ideal for a couple of any age. Highly recommended, as is the nearby La Source restaurant in Tursac.
Ian and Diane M. - Blackpool, UK

Lovely place in a beautiful area.So peaceful yet not too far from’ civilization’. We stayed in the comfortable and well equipped ’Haybarn’ which overlooked the pool. We will definitely be going back as so much more to see and do.

We had a wonderful week at Le Manoir des Granges. You made us very welcome and provided for our every need. The accommodation was excellent, tasteful and comfortable. We would recommend your establishment to any of our friends who might be planning to visiting the south of France.
Wyn M. - Australia

Almost on arrival at La Roque Terrasse we felt in a home away from home. The gite was everything we needed. It has excellent facilities for travellers (good kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities, wifi internet, good television choices and easy parking and road access.) It was a pleasure to return to the Terrasse at the end of each day. The property is an ideal base for exploring the Dordogne and Vézère valleys and has good access to larger towns such as Sarlat, is close to excellent villages such as St-Leon-sur-Vézère, and good access to Lascaux caves and the Valle de l’Homme. The property has direct views to La Roque-Saint-Christophe and easy access to riverside walks. Nearby towns and villages offer broader services and excellent eating choices. It was a genuine pleasure to spend our week in this part of France.
Ross and Kim D. - Canberra, Australia

Friends and I spent two weeks at Le Manoir. We can’t say enough positive about the experience. Paul and Philippa were gracious hosts, providing the perfect balance between being being attentive to our questions and needs, but honoring our privacy as well. They enthusiastically offered to make restaurant reservations, bike rental connections, etc and provided a wealth of resources including books about French cheeses and wines (very interesting!) as well as several area maps. The facility was well-kept, clean, charming, and very comfortable. We couldn’t have asked for a more pleasant experience in rural southwest France.
Kim K. - Hudson, Wisconsin, SUA

Paul and Philippa make you feel incredibly welcome and are happy to answer any queries and resolve any problems almost immediately. As a result we thoroughly recommend this property to anyone planning a holiday on a self catering basis in the Vézère Valley.
Mike and Sue P. - Worcester, UK

Staying in Le Roque Terrace was lovely. Five minutes walk from the little village of Le Moustier, with its boulangerie and great little bar, Le Roque faces a main but relatively quiet road running parallel to the lovely River Vézère. On waking, I could stand at the French windows and view the stunning Roque St Christophe, just over the river, and wait for the sun to beat down on the wooden terrace.
Helen T. - Bath, England

We stayed for a week while we researched the area with a view to buying a gite complex of our own. Paul and Phillipa were perfect hosts and were more than happy showing us around and answering our many questions. We enjoyed our stay in the Haybarn which is a spacious, one bedroom ensuite gîte with its own terrace. The evenings were cold so it was great to have the wood burner to take the chill off. It’s a great location for exploring the area with many tourist attractions within an easy drive. But it’s also a good place to do nothing and laze by the pool if that’s what you are after. The view of La Roque Saint-Christophe which is opposite looks amazing at night when it’s all lit up.
Bernadette B. - London, England

There were no surprises here, other than relaxation. Paul and Philippa were warm, friendly and very accommodating. They helped us navigate getting a bicycle, finding a wonderful local restaurant, and leading us to the most delicious and reasonable wine purchases in the area. The Tobacco Barn was quite comfortable for us 3 ladies, we had our own rooms with en-suite bathrooms, nice shared living space and kitchen with all of the amenities to make breakfast and lunches... we went out for dinner most nights. The village of Le Moustier was within walking distance... fresh croissants at the boulangerie every morning. We felt honored to be residing across from the caves of St Christophe, an historical site. Lovely time, lovely accommodations.
Sue M. - Minnesota, USA

We rented the main house and two of the gites. Philippa and Paul were the most helpful and welcoming of hosts. Their properties are home from home, with everything you could wish for. I would recommend it to anyone looking for comfortable luxury. The area is stunning and there is lots to see. The local restaurant is within walking distance and good value. One of the most relaxing and restful holidays we have had for a long time.
Sheila S. - Surrey, England

We arrived at Le Manoir and found a relaxing haven. The gîte was spotless and well equipped; all our needs were anticipated and catered for. Phillipa and Paul were attentive hosts but not at all intrusive. Free WiFi meant I could keep in touch with family on the other side of the world from a remote French village. From our gîte we had an uninterupted view over the river to the St ChristopheGrotto and we enjoyed our short morning walks to the village bakery for croissants. I loved swimming in the pool after a day out exploring. This property was highly recommended to me by a friend who stayed last year and we were equally delighted with every aspect of our stay.
Sue D. - Christchurch, New Zealand

We stayed in Le Manoir des Granges on one of our visits to France. We loved the place so much that we decided to have our wedding there. The stay was fantastic and our wedding guests are still talking about Le Manoir des Granges. We couldn`t ask for a better place to get married. If you`re looking for a small venue with great atmosphere and good accommodation look no further.

A lovely accomodation in a very british style, we loved it very much. Everything was perfect! The Dordogne and Vezere area is one of the most beautiful countrysides in France. It was very hard to leave.

Le Manoir des Granges was a good starting point for our different activities like golfing, cycling, canoeing on the Vezere and visiting historical monuments, towns and castles in thisfascinating area. Be sure, we will come back !
Helmut H. - Germany

The gîte was amazing, very traditional, with a lovely view of La Roque St Christophe. As a cyclist I found the area fantastic, miles and miles of quiet roads with picture perfect scenery. We will be back!

Our family of nine from Australia, spanning three generations, stayed in this fabulous house in April 2011. It was perfect for our needs. The owners, Philippa and Paul, were excellent hosts, very helfpul and approachable. We would highly recommend it.
Beverley W. - Australia

Nick and I stayed at the Hay Barn at Payzac Le Moustier In January 2011. The Haybarn itself was comfortable, spacious and warm with crockery and cooking facilities for our stay. The Haybarn was clean, presentable and the bathroom had a super shower (and bath) with heaps of hot water. I hope they will let us stay again on our next venture to Peyzac Le Moustier .
NIck and Glynnis V. - UK

I couldn’t have asked for nicer hosts or accommodation. The house is very spacious and full of charm and very comfortable even in the depths of winter, the log fire really sets the scene on chilly winter evenings. I very much look forward to visiting again.
Dave T. - Stafford, UK

We were giving the place a once over before we have our wedding blessing there in September. We were pleasantly surprised of the standard of the Gites. We new they would be good, but the quality and style was magnificent. Our guests will love them!
