About the Property
The grand salon with comfortable seating around an open fireplace
The grand salon with comfortable seating around an open fireplace
Moulin Niras is a 17th century olive oil mill which has been meticulously renovated and extended, using local stone, terracotta and wood. It has been featured in the Daily Mail and Country Life magazine. The house is set amid three acres (over a hectare) of secluded gardens. Beyond, vineyards and protected woods create a peaceful and private setting, but the house is only a ten minute walk from the centre of the village of Callas. Five bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms, accommodate ten guests plus an additional two children in comfort and privacy; each bedroom overlooks the gardens surrounding the house. Wireless internet access is available throughout the house and pool area.

The large, deep swimming pool is surrounded by a stone terrace furnished with chairs and loungers, and a large teak dining table comfortably seating twelve. The pool has an alarm and is fully fenced and secured, meeting all current French safety legislation. Beside the pool is a Turkish-style sofra - a roofed outdoor sitting area with a central chimney-piece. Ideal for shady daytime relaxing, the sofra is also a cozy place with a log fire for cool evenings. A large gas barbecue is next to the sofra and close to the second kitchen for convenient poolside cooking. The gardens include a boules court, olive trees, herb and rose gardens, mature trees and meadowland.

French double doors lead from the terrace and garden into the very large grand salon, which has a high vaulted, beamed ceiling. This room was originally the main part of the old mill, and many original features have been retained including a millstone, several gears and the great wooden waterwheel. Large cream sofas surround a central stone fireplace. A wide-screen TV with satellite channels, a DVD/CD player and a Bose stereo provide entertainment.

The dining area at the end of the room has a solid oak table and an antique dresser. Double French doors lead onto a terrace with a table and chairs under the trees. Next to the dining area, the spacious and well-equipped kitchen features hand-crafted wooden cabinets and a flagstone floor. Appliances include a professional La Canche six-burner/two-oven stove, a large American-style fridge/freezer, a dishwasher and a microwave. Another set of French doors lead onto the dining terrace.

In the cave reached from the exterior of the house is a newly-added games room including flat-screen TV/DVD player and a foosball table.

On the ground floor next to the swimming pool is a second kitchen and a shower room, both with cool stone floors. The kitchen has a fridge/freezer, a microwave, a washing machine/dryer, a sink and plenty of food preparation and storage cabinets, and is ideally situated to serve the poolside dining table.

Bedroom one and its en-suite bathroom are in the old part of the house. The bedroom's stone walls and terracotta floor have been carefully restored; hand-crafted oak cupboards and an antique armoire provide storage. Double French doors lead out to the rose and herb garden terrace. The bathroom features an oversized stone-tiled shower and stone flooring.

There are two more double bedrooms overlooking the pool, both with en-suite bathrooms. One has a queen-sized bed and a loft above with two single beds, where two children can sleep. Double French doors lead onto a terrace overlooking the pool. The bright white-tiled en-suite bathroom has a roomy shower and traditional terracotta floors. The third bedroom has a high wooden-beamed ceiling, an en-suite shower room and a private terrace. The fourth and fifth double bedrooms lie off the grand salon, one on the ground floor and one upstairs. Each of the bedrooms has an en-suite bathroom. One has a queen-size double bed and one has a pair of twin beds, and both are furnished with antique wardrobes and chests, and feature wooden-beamed ceilings and terracotta floors.

About the Area
The market in Callas
The market in Callas
The village of Callas (featured in the June 2007 Conde Nast Traveller magazine) is just ten minutes walk from Moulin Niras. A typical ancient hilltop village, Callas has all of the essentials, including a baker, a butcher, a cafe/bar, a post office, a grocer, a wine shop and a couple of restaurants. The village hosts a small market on Saturday mornings. There is a larger regional market every Sunday at Le Muy, 15 kilometres away. Le Muy also has the excellent golf course of St Endreol. Tennis is available 3km away, and the surrounding countryside has excellent tracks for mountain biking and hiking.
About the Region
The nearby village of Callas
The nearby village of Callas
The spectacular scenery of the Gorges du Verdon, a great canyon cut by the Verdon river, is 50 kilometres from Moulin Niras. The glamourous and exciting towns of the French Riviera, such as Cannes, Nice, and St Tropez, are thirty to sixty minutes drive from the house. Also within an easy drive are Marseilles, famous for its 18th century port area and its excellent seafood restaurants, and the fascinating historical city of Aix-en-Provence, founded by the Romans as a spa town and an important cultural and political centre during the Middle Ages, and a great many vineyards, which welcome visitors for wine-tasting sessions. Near to Callas are its sister villages of Bargemon and Seillans, both famous for their village life and architecture.

Guest Opinions

You have created a heavenly Provencal getaway and we hope well have the opportunity to stay there again.
Mark P. - Los Angeles, California, USA

The house was beyond our expectations. My wife was especially pleased and noted that the pictures do not adequately portray the house. It was extremely clean and well kept.
Steve W. - Washington, USA

Moulin Niras was by far the best house weve stayed in ten years of going to France. The house is tasteful, comfortable, spacious and very well kept. Our only regret was that we couldnt stay for five weeks instead of three.
Helene H. - California, USA

Our time at Moulin Niras was like living in a Conde Nast Traveller feature. The house manages to combine elegant living with true comfort, ensuring a relaxed vacation from start to finish. Even with a full house, theres room for solitude with plenty of space inside and out. The house also more than copes with guests demands for endless hot water, great kitchen facilities, and easy access to all the South of Frances main attractions.
Eliza L - Hong Kong

The villa was all that we hoped it would be and Id recommend it without hesitation. We especially enjoyed the pool and it became known as the best pool in the world. And we were very pleased with the location with its great access to all the main sights of the area.
Bob C. - San Jose, California, USA

The house was great and we all enjoyed the location and facilities immensely. It was superb in so many ways. I would highly recommend your property and my comments come from someone who has travelled and rented properties in Europe for 20 years. Moulin Niras is a great property!
Colin R. - Sydney, Australia

We enjoyed the house and area very much. Thanks for letting us be your guests for the three weeks.
Line L. - Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Your Moulin Niras does not disappoint! We are thrilled with our accommodations, the whole family is enjoying its delights and the pool, which all agree is wonderful.
