About the Holiday Home

The swimming pool and sun deck
The swimming pool and sun deck
L’Orangerie, originally built for fruit ripening, is set within the walled gardens of the Château de Charras, which was built for the Marquis de Charras in the 18th century, and was recently converted to a very high standard.

The two-storey stone building is divided into two units. La Grande Orangerie has four bedrooms to take up to nine guests, while La Petite Orangerie is a two-bedroom unit to take up to four. Both units can be rented together for parties of up to 13.

Each of the two units has its own private patio area with a dining table and sun loungers. The two patios are separated by a hedge, so guests have plenty of privacy.

Guests may also enjoy the extensive 13-acre (five hectare) private estate surrounding the house, which includes outstanding gardens, two tennis courts and an enclosed heated swimming pool with a terrace and sun loungers. These facilities are shared with guests at the Château. The property has fine views over some 50 kilometres (30 miles) of the surrounding Charente/Dordogne countryside.

Special features: • Pool on the property
Swimming pool: 6x15m heated outdoor pool with sun deck

About the Area

The view from the bedrooms of the surrounding countryside
The view from the bedrooms of the surrounding countryside
L’Orangerie is set within the walled private estate of a grade one listed château, which is located in the small and attractive rural village of Charras. The village has a bar and restaurant and a selection of local shops for basic provisions within a two minute walk, with the nearest supermarket about 15 minutes' drive away. Charras is set in the lush countryside on the border of the Charente and Dordogne, which offers many places to walk and hike among woodlands and forest as well as a great choice of quiet roads for cycling. There are several local markets and good restaurants to discover within a short drive. Bikes are available for hire locally.

About the Region

The nearby town of Brantôme
The nearby town of Brantôme
There are many interesting places to visit within less than an hour’s drive, including the towns of Angoulème, Brantôme and Cognac, the centre of the brandy industry since the 18th century.

Both Remy Martin and Hennessy have their distilleries in Cognac, and offer tours of their facilities. It’s a little further to the Roman town of Saintes and the beaches of the Atlantic Coast.

L’Orangerie is equidistant from the three cities of Poitiers, La Rochelle, and Bordeaux, all of which are well worth visiting on day trips. Poitiers is the site of the famous Futuroscope, a theme park devoted to the moving image, which is an excellent day out for all ages.

La Rochelle, a former naval port, has great seafood restaurants, a marina, and a superb aquarium. Bordeaux is the centre of the wine industry and has a finely-preserved 18th century old city.
