The abbey at St. Jean d'Angély
Le Petit Château is located between the market towns of Aulnay de Saintonge and Matha. The village has its own garage, butcher, baker, post office and its own distillery where a bottle of Pineau des Charentes, a local wine fortified with Cognac, can be purchased. Aulnay, which is ten minutes away, has bars and restaurants, two supermarkets, several drugstores, doctors, banks, bakers, butchers, and a famous Romanesque church. A modern public swimming pool with slides can be enjoyed by the whole family. The large town of St Jean d'Angély is fifteen minutes away and boasts markets selling local products, an indoor pool, and a theme park with its own boating lake. The nearby river Boutonne is good for windsurfing, pedal-boating, canoeing, and fishing. It also offers an artificial beach, an adventure playground, basketball and volleyball courts. There are also a number of golf courses nearby, tennis courts, moto-cross fields, riding stables, and archery and shooting ranges
About the Region
The beach at St Palais
The beach at St Palais
The Poitou-Charentes is a diversified region with a sunny Atlantic shoreline, a unique marshland called the Marais Poitevin, typical towns, fortresses and ramparts, and a generous farmland. The coast is less than an hour away by car and enjoys a large amount of sunshine throughout the year. The vineyards of Cognac are just 30kms south ans sampling the local crus is a must. Poitiers, with its Futuroscope theme park centred on the Imax image technology, is 80 km away. The climate is temperate, and the Atlantic air is clear and fresh. After a mild winter enabling mimosa to flower as early as January on the coast, spring comes early. Summer remains the peak tourist season but the late summer and early autumn are ideal periods for relaxing holidays and sightseeing tours. The Charente Maritime has a micro climate, and offers the second-greatest number of hours of sunshine of any region in France! Cheap flights are available from Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Southampton to La Rochelle or Poitiers.

Guest Opinions

We have had a great holiday. The house was nice and spacious for ten and feels very French. We loved the pool, table tennis, play area, trampoline coaching, and recommendations of things to do.
John B. - Shipley, Yorkshire, UK

It’s been good to slow down for a week. Loved the area, especially the countryside. Can recommend everywhere - but particularly Saintes for shops, Royan for coastline & beaches & Cognac for alcohol. Would recommend to all.
C. family - UK

Fabulous golfing holiday exploring the three 18-hole golf courses of the area. Great accommodation.
Simon H. - Gloucestershire, UK

Great time had by all, very relaxing holiday. The Louis d’Or is comfy and well equipped, providing a perfect base to explore this lovely area. The pool is a godsend in the heat of the afternoon.
Gordon M. - Scotland

We really had a good time, and the Chateau was the ideal place for our family reunion. We had a wonderful time in all the places that we visited - Bordeaux, Royan, La Rochelle, St Emilion and the Medec - don’t miss the ferry ride.
Mike E. - Bonn, Germany
