About the Property
The living room
The living room
Set in a small square at the entrance to the old village of Sablet, facing the village fountain, the house forms part of the village walls. The walls were built in the 13th and 14th centuries, and parts of the house are thought to date from that time. The house is made up of what were originally two smaller village houses, and features exposed stone walls and traditional oak roof beams.
The downstairs bedroom
The downstairs bedroom
The house is on three levels; the front door opens into the middle level, which contains the main living room, a double bedroom, a bathroom, and a separate toilet. Upstairs is one single and one double bedroom, and an additional living room, which has a sofa bed for occasional visitors. Downstairs is the fully equipped kitchen. Outside, there's a large south-facing terrace with a barbecue. Parking is available just 50 metres away. The front door faces a small square where the village fountain is located.

About the Area
The Fountain of Sablet, just across the property entrance
The Fountain of Sablet, just across the property entrance
Situated on a hill at the base of the foothills to Mont Ventoux and the Dentelles de Montmirail, Sablet is a classic Provençal “village perché”. The old village is circular in shape and the narrow streets lead in concentric circles to the church standing at the highest point. Unlike most of the villages in the area, Sablet was never feudalised and has no castle. The Sabletains were always free men making their living from the culture of olives and vines, as they still do today.

Sablet is a living village of some 1,150 inhabitants. Unlike most of the other villages in the area, Sablet has retained its shops and services and acts as a centre for local people. There is a lively café-restaurant facing the town square where one may dine on the terrace at lunch time. Next door is another, slightly more formal, restaurant. There are two bakers, a butcher, a delicatessen, two small supermarkets, two hairdressers, a flower shop, a newsagent, and a tobacconist. In case of emergencies there is a small medical centre with resident medical and dental specialists. Nearly all the shops and restaurants are within 150 m of the house.

About the Region
The village of Sablet
The village of Sablet
Sablet sits in the centre of the wine growing area of the southern Côtes-du-Rhône. Close by are the vineyards of Gigondas, Vacqueras, Chateauneuf du Pape, Rasteau, among many others. Most vineyards offer visitors the chance to taste and purchase their wines. To the west of the village stretches the plain of the Rhône, and to the east are the hills leading up to the Dentelles du Montmirail. Sablet is a perfect location for walking or cycling, whether guests enjoy challenging mountain trails or meandering through the vineyards.

The nearest town of any size, Vaison-la-Romaine, is 10 kilometres away. Each Tuesday there is a large and well attended market, well worth a visit for a glimpse of everyday French life. In Vaison there are full banking services and a large outdoor public swimming pool. Vaison also has famous Roman ruins and the Roman amphitheatre is used in the summer for concerts and plays. Some 16 kilometres to the west is the town of Orange, also famous for its Roman amphitheatre where opera is staged in the summer. To the south are the medieval cities of Carpentras and Avignon. In Avignon is the legendary Palais des Papes, where the French popes ruled in opposition to Rome. Further afield are the cities of Nîmes and Aix-en-Provence, the Pont-du Gard, and and the spectacular Gorges de l’Ardèche. There are many excellent restaurants in the surrounding area and the comments and recommendations of previous guests can be seen in the house book.

Guest Opinions

I have to express our surprise with your house in Sablet. We hoped it would be a nice gîte but did not imagine such a charming home with an inimitable atmosphere in the heart of a lovely mediaeval village. Everything was perfect (including the user's manual), many thanks for all.
Lázló K. - Szolnok, Hungary

Thank you so much for your accommodation. We really enjoyed ourselves. We felt very comfortable in Sablet, and had a relaxing time. Your neighbour even gave us a nice bottle of wine the night before we left.
Allan MacD. - Troy, Nova Scotia, Canada

We have returned from a splendid week at your house in Sablet. Many thanks for letting us stay there. The surrounding country was, as we already knew from having an Avignon flat for 10 years, stunning. Many thanks.
William M. - Portsmouth, Hampshire, England

Pablo M. - Madrid, Spain

We have thoroughly enjoyed the house in Sablet. Perfection as an adjective falls far short...
Lynne and Tom S. - Spokane, Washington, USA

We enjoyed our stay very much. We found the village and the surrounding area very pleasant with all the types of activities we were looking for, from the markets in Vaison and Orange to hiking and swimming at the Pont du Gard, sightseeing in Avignon, and cycling on Mont Ventoux. A great week in Provence, and definitely not our last.
James A. - Davis, California, USA

We enjoyed our stay tremendously! The gîte was perfectly situated and far lovelier than the photos could have shown. It was our friends' first trip to Europe and they were absolutely delighted!
