Since everything is within walking distance, you can explore the village of Saint-Saturnin Les Apt at your own pace. The South of France is well known for its pastries and breads; visitors can taste many of them in the local patisserie and enjoy a pastis or a traditional meal at one of the several restaurants and bars in the village. There is an open market where local produce, cheeses, meats, and flowers can be purchased. Guests can use the village swimming pool and tennis court. In and around the village, fields of lavander sweeten the air, and cherry and fig trees produce edible delicacies.
About the Region
The village of Saint-Saturnin and the Luberon park
The village of Saint-Saturnin and the Luberon park
Just 10km away lies Apt, a village built by the Romans 2,000 years ago. A visit to Apt’s famous cathedral of Sainte-Anne is a must. The crypt is open to visitors, and is said to contain relics of Sainte-Anne, mother of the Virgin Mary. Apt has a lively market, featuring interesting products such as colourful fabrics, antiques, and woven baskets.

This part of France is filled with Roman heritage. Leaving Apt to the west, one crosses Pont Julien, one of the best preserved Roman bridges in France. This road leads to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, known as the birthplace of the famous astrologer and prophet, Nostradamus (Michel de Nostre Dame). His life is chronicled in the Musée Alpilles Pierre de Brun, which is located in a 16th century château. The astrologer's home is at Maillane, 7km away.

At the nearby town of Glanum, there is evidence of a neolithic civilization, with many prehistoric relics. Further west is Les Baux de Provence, with its clifftop fortress which was carved out of stone in the 13th century. It’s worth walking uphill to the castle, to get a full appreciation of why it remained impregnable… until it fell. 40 km from Croagnes is Avignon, the City of Popes. It’s an excellent choice for a day trip, as it is full of historic and cultural places of interest. Visit the Palais des Papes, where popes resided during the turbulent 14th century, and the Museum of Le Petit Palais, home to the most remarkable collection of Italian art in France. Further afield, there’s Marseille, with its beautiful old port, or the beaches of the Côte d'Azur.

Guest Opinions

We enjoyed a wonderful stay at your St Saturnin gîte in July 2003- a perfect place for our family. We cooked delicious meals with fresh food from the market, not to mention rising early each morning to visit the local boulangerie for fresh bread and croissants. Saint saturnin is certainly the village with most unspoiled "charme". It is tops on our list! Saint saturnin made us feel like we were part of Provence, if just for a short time. We will always remember fondly the quiet, peaceful beauty of your charming village and wish to come again. Thank you for your hospitality.

Saint Saturnin has been a wonderful base for our delightful stay in Provence. We have loved the village, were here for a charming local Bastille Day parade with lanterns for the children and dancing in the square. We also enjoyed the opportunity to join our gracious owner Jean-Claude in a glass of wine in the village. Thank you, Jean-Claude, for being so helpful with ideas.

Saint Saturnin has ben the perfect base from which to explore the nearby villages of Provence- good restaurants, a beautiful view and very friendly people! Try the croissant aux amandes at the first bakers- not to be missed! Thanks to Jean-Claude, we were able to overdose on the superb selection of local produce from the Coustellet Market on sunday mornings. A first visit to this part of Provence- but certainly not our last!
