About the Property
The swimming pool
The swimming pool
The Pigeonnier is a classic rural home dating from a quieter age, three storeys high with traditional stone and earth walls nearly a metre thick. It is surrounded by trees and set in a hectare (two acres) of private meadow land. The only other house on the property belongs to the owners, who respect their guests' privacy but are always happy to assist.

The top floor, which was once home to flocks of pigeons, is now empty. This one-bedroom house is ideal for a couple who want to explore the Dordogne region.

In front of the house, an outside terrace is the place to take breakfast, with pretty views over the valley. When the sun gets too hot, a second terrace, covered and partially enclosed, has a barbecue, dining area and a couple of armchairs.

Hammocks under the pine trees are just the thing for a siesta. Guests have full access to a large, heated swimming pool (5 x 10 metres) and their own private entrance.

On the ground floor, the well equipped kitchen has a fridge/freezer, ceramic stovetop, oven and microwave. The bathroom has a shower, washbasin and toilet. A television and DVD player with a collection of movies is available.

Outside steps lead up to a small balcony, to enjoy an early morning cup of tea or a last look at the stars, and into the bedroom, which has a double bed and an antique grandfather clock with hands stuck permanently at five minutes past 3 o’clock, making sure that time stands still in this place.

Limeuil, at the confluence of the Dordogne and Vézère rivers
With Bergerac, the nearest airport, thirty minutes away, and the fully restored medieval town of Sarlat forty minutes in the other direction, Sainte-Alvère is a perfect base for exploring the Dordogne and Vézère river valleys.

The region is full of picturesque towns and villages, unique houses, fairytale châteaux and ancient grottos and caves.

Limeuil, where the houses cling to the hill above the confluence of the Dordogne and the Vézère rivers, is nearby.

Trémolat, with its picturesque views and wide calm waters, the riverside market towns of Le Bugue and Lalinde, and Paunat, with its massive 12th century abbey, are all within fifteen minutes’ drive.

A further ten minutes will take you to Le-Buisson-de-Cadouin, which has reputedly the best river beach for swimming in the Dordogne region.

Also within easy reach is St.-Cyprien, the first of several delightful riverside villages such as Beynac and Roque-Gageac, on the way to Sarlat and beyond. Restaurants are plentiful and of high quality, and all the villages have night markets and local fairs.
