About the Holiday Home

The barn has been converted to a covered terrace
The barn has been converted to a covered terrace
The property was built in the early 19th century as a traditional brick farmhouse. The house is on top of a small hill, with scenic views in all directions of rural Languedoc and the distant Pyrénées mountains.

On the grounds are two old windmills, no longer in operation, from which the property derives its name. The house has been completely restored and redecorated, and comfortably accommodates up to 10 adults in five bedrooms. In addition there is a further room for two children, with a bunk beds and a cot.

A large open barn, called the Hangar, with a tiled roof is attached to the house. This has been converted into a covered terrace and is ideal for relaxed entertaining. Guests can eat, drink, play giant chess or table tennis, or simply relax in comfortable chairs. Attached to the Hangar is a summer kitchen and enclosed dining area leading to an east-facing breakfast terrace. From the Hangar, steps lead down to the ten by five metre swimming pool. The pool is surrounded by a terrace, with loungers and deckchairs and there are plenty of trees around the property, creating shady spots.

The large living room is furnished with comfortable sofas and chairs, and there are plenty of books, videos and games. Satellite channels include BBC and ITV. French windows on both sides keep the room cool even on the hottest days.

The well equipped pine-fitted kitchen opens onto the south-facing terrace. The house also has wireless internet access.

Upstairs are three more bedrooms, one with a double bed, the others with twin beds. All of the bedrooms have great views. There are two further bathrooms with showers, which have been recently refurbished.

The second Moulin was recently converted into a bedroom and bathroom, and the circular tower provides luxurious accomodation on two floors.

The surrounding countryside, looking towards the Pyrénées
The surrounding countryside, looking towards the Pyrénées
“Aux Moulins de Sainte-Camelle” is in a rural area, surrounded by fields, hills, and woodland. There are many good trails to walk or hike, ranging from gentle to more demanding.

It’s a five-minute drive to the nearest village, Salles-sur-l'Hers, which has a small supermarket, a butcher, a baker, and a pharmacy.

Castelnaudary, about 20 minutes away, has several major supermarkets and shops and a weekly market selling fresh local produce. There are several market towns within a short drive, and a great selection of fine restaurants. Tennis courts are available nearby in Salles-sur-l'Hers.

A large lake, the Lac de la Ganguise, is a 15-minute drive, and offers watersports, including sailing. There are several good golf courses, including one at Carcassonne, about 50 minutes away.

About the Region

The fortress of Montségur
The fortress of Montségur
This part of Southwest France is full of history. Much of the region was shaped by the crusade against the Cathars (or Albigensians) – an unorthodox religious movement that split from the Catholic Church in the 13th century.

The Avignon pope Innocent III set out to quash their movement in a new crusade, branding them as heretics. He sent armies of mercenaries to take their fortresses perched high atop mountains, as well as their fortified cities, such as that of Carcassonne, which fell to Simon de Montfort in 1209.

Carcassonne
Carcassonne
This famous walled medieval city of Carcassonne, whose fortifications are today a UNESCO World Heritage site, is within an hour’s drive.

Visitors could plan a day of culture, combining visits to two or three of Cathar castles, such as that of Montségur, Puivert, or Peyrepertuse, with an excellent lunch. Toulouse is also under an hour away; it has a major museum and is well worth a visit.
