The best way to refresh your knowledge of the French language, or simply sharpen your communication skills, is to take a course before you set sail to France. No matter what your current level or proficiency is, beginner, intermediate or advanced, you will greatly benefit by learning the essentials or brushing up on distant memories. Numerous training possibilities are offered, from on line tutorials to language schools such as the famed Alliance Française network.
If you don't have a lot of time at your disposal before your departure, or the desire to attend a full time course, the Alliance Française will be your first choice. Founded in 1883 in Paris, the Alliance is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting the appreciation of French language and culture in all their aspects. Present on five continents, the Alliance's schools and cultural centers teach French in an immersion-like setting, using a communicative approach within a French cultural environment.
In the United States, Alliances Françaises are found in major cities coast to coast, from New York, the largest on the continent, Boston, or Houston, to San Francisco or Seattle as well as many other US cities. A complete updated list is available from the USA Alliance headquarters.
In Canada, you will find this information on the Alliance Française of Canada's website. You will be directed towards the many programs offered in the main urban centers such as, Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg or Halifax.
You may also wish to take advantage of your stay in France to learn French in an immersion school. In this case, the Alliances Française and other affiliated centers will surely meet your needs. There are centers scattered throughout France. Those of Languedoc, Cannes and Vichy offer some of the best services. Most of those programmes combine intensive instruction with cultural activities and entertainment.
