Gite.com - Houses for rent in France

In all likelihood you will move through French customs easily, providing you have correct documentation and are not importing expensive or organic goods (such as animals or foodstuffs).

Most airports are equipped with two access wickets. The first one is reserved for EU nationals who do not have to show a passport while the second is for all other travelers. As is customary, you may have to show a valid visa (not necessary for residents of the US or Canada) as well as departure tickets and documentation of your financial resources while in France. Mark the containers of any prescription drugs clearly, and carry a copy of the prescription to show French customs, in case you may be asked to.

Any items you have purchased outside France while on your vacation must be declared when entering France. Each visitor is granted a fairly high import allowance; however, if the imported items are higher in cost than the allowance permits, duty will be charged. You can check the amount and the make-up of your personal allowance by looking up the section Goods you may bring in or by visiting the French Customs web site.

If expensive goods accompany you, it is wise to register them with your customs authorities before leaving. Make a list (complete with serial numbers and country of origin) and have it authorized by the authorities of your home country. This will ensure that you do not pay tax on goods that you already own when you return home.
