Budget travelers who wish to go places without waiting endlessly on the side of the road, sign in hand, until someone picks them up, can hook up with drivers going their way through a number of programs.
Allostop is an association, boasting 40 years of experience, that gathers information on available destinations. The association offers this service exclusively to its members. To join the association, one can either pay 30 francs per trip of 200kms or less, plus 10 francs per additional 100kms, or pay 250 francs for a total of eight trips of undetermined lengths to be taken within a two year period. In addition, the traveler must pay a 20 centimes fee per kilometer to the driver of the car. When a match between a destination request and an offer is found, the member is contacted by phone.
Autostop is a free service that links drivers and passengers headed in the same direction. The passenger may be asked to contribute towards the cost of the trip. Autostop is the French word for hitchhiking.
Covoiture.com is a new computer-based service that allows drivers and passengers to view or insert adds relating to point of origins and destinations, dates of trips and telephone numbers.
Association Pouce is a similar computer service where the hitchhiker receives an automatic notification when a driver is announcing a trip to the same destination as the one requested.
