l'Appartement à Château de Charras is an apartment on the ground floor of the Château de Charras, dating from 1722. With one bedroom and a sofa-bed in the living room, it is ideal for a couple seeking a romantic holiday, or for two couples or a small family.

The Château is set in five hectares (twelve acres) of superbly maintained grounds with an orchard, tree-lined avenues, and a large grassed area, perfect for playing, peaceful picnics or sunset strolls. There is a large heated swimming pool and two tennis courts.

The chateau is steps from the village which offers a boulangerie and general store/post office. A number of bars and restaurants are located nearby.

The apartment offers comfortable, well appointed period accommodation complete with a spacious unique terrace. The apartment's walled terrace adjoins the kitchen and has a shaded dining table and barbecue, for outdoor dining all day and through the long evenings.

Located on the ground floor of the château, the apartment has access to the grand stone staircase and enjoys views of the impressive tree shaded courtyard.

The wood-panelled living area has high ceilings and is decorated with framed prints and art. Tall shuttered windows fill it with light during the day. It is well set up for an evening in with a comfortable double sofa-bed, a cupboard filled with board games, audio-visual equipment, wi-fi, and a wine cooler. A round dining table seats four.

The en-suite bedroom
The en-suite bedroom

The recently decorated en- suite bedroom provides a comfortable kingsize bed and ample storage space. The large shuttered windows offer magnificent views over the grounds and countryside. For the early riser, the sunrise can be seen from bed.

The kitchen was been completely refurbished in 2018. It is well equipped and appointed with a new dishwasher, electric cooker and hob /stovetop, microwave, freezer and fridge. There's an extensive range of good quality utensils, cutlery, crockery and storage and preparation space.

The recently refurbished bathroom has a walk-in shower, washbasin, shelving, toilet and radiator. A washing machine is tucked away in its own cupboard. Once again the original period windows are large and shuttered, offering views of the local fields.

Where to Go, What to Do

The picturesque town of Brantôme
The picturesque town of Brantôme

The Chateau and its landscaped grounds is a tranquil place offering visitors a chance to unwind, spend quality time together and recharge. Summer time provides horizons of sunflowers and corn, a warmer climate, villages, fishing, markets, empty roads for cycling or jogging, forest walks and gastronomic delights.

The village itself provides all essentials so it's possible to 'stay put' if that's what's required. However, within a short distance one can enjoy discovering this little known part of France. If required, guests can visit a market everyday or visit a local Chateau to discover the part that local characters played in pre- revolutionary France.

Among the places to visit nearby, Angoulème is a hilltop cathedral town with impressive ramparts, an old quarter and cobbled streets with numerous cafés and restaurants. The indoor market sells wonderfully fresh fish from the nearby Atlantic.

Brantôme is a beautiful riverside town with an impressive ancient abbey, mill and weir. The Friday market is popular and excellent and the town offers restaurants for all from the discerning to the hungry.

The beaches of the Atlantic coast

For those who want a contrast from rural France during their visit, the Atlantic coastline is within easy reach, ideally on a day trip.

Royan provides superb beaches, Atlantic bathing and art deco architecture. La Rochelle is an amazing historic town offering beaches, markets, history, fishing, bars and restaurants with outstanding seafood.
