About the Holiday Home

Farmhouse Apartments Chardonnay and Pinot Noir
Farmhouse Apartments Chardonnay and Pinot Noir

En La Marre is an early 19th century farmhouse and barns, set amidst forests, meadows, lakes and streams in a tranquil rural location. The estate adjoining the property is farmland where cattle are raised, with wild flowers, birds and wildlife in abundance.

The property has been converted into six self-contained, self-catering apartments, ideal for couples of all interests and lifestyles. As the property can take up to 12 guests it is suitable for groups of friends wishing to holiday together but retain their own independence. They are unsuitable for children of any age; pets accepted on request. The apartments are set around a courtyard and heated swimming pool with open views over the countryside with only the Charolais beef for neighbours. The property was once the estate of French aristocrats who were spared during the French Revolution because of their popularity among the local villagers.

The swimming pool
The swimming pool

The current owners, Chris and Judith Mosedale, bought the property from the de Charette family in 1989, and converted it into apartments , retaining the stone walls, tiled roofs, and oak beams which give the property such character. The courtyard has a herb garden in the centre, which guests are invited to use for their own culinary creations.

All the buildings surrounding the courtyard are bedecked with colourful flowers, vines and herbaceous borders. Patios are also adorned with flowers. The courtyard opens onto the swimming pool and sun lounging area with plenty of sun-loungers offering a relaxing place in which to unwind and soak up the sun or cool down in the shade. On arrival at En La Marre all guests are invited by the resident owners, Chris and Judith, to a welcome drink at 6pm to meet the other guests and be updated on local events, markets, and other information.

Barn Apartments on upper floor

Each of the six apartments sleeps two. They are spacious and furnished with the owners' own personal belongings, antiques, paintings and books, and are generously equipped with modern features. Each apartment has a fully equipped kitchen with full-size gas stove, refrigerator with freezer compartment, microwave oven, toaster, tea-towels, iron and ironing board. Bedrooms all have a king size bed with bedding and linen provided. Bathrooms come equipped with towels, toiletries, loo paper, a shaving point and hairdryer. Livingrooms have a radio and CD player, plenty of books and magazines and tourist information. A DVD player and DVDs are available by arrangement.

Each apartment has its own patio area with garden furniture and a gas barbecue. There is a guests' laundry area on-site free of charge; 4 bicycles to borrow free-of-charge and ample free car parking. WIFI is accessible free-of-charge.

The owners, Chris and Judith, hold a communal barbecue on Thursday evenings, for those interested, with each couple contributing a food dish and some wine. Anyone with a talent such as singing, playing an instrument, or storytelling, is given an opportunity to entertain.

The main farmhouse - Chardonnay & Pinot Noir
The main farmhouse - Chardonnay & Pinot Noir

There are two apartments in the original farmhouse. Chardonnay takes up the ground floor. The other, Pinot Noir, is situated above in the original granary of the house, and is accessed by an external staircase. The Pigeonnier is a unique independent building on two floors, and provides a romantic nest for honeymooners.

The three apartments in the barn, Pinot Blanc, Gamay and Aligoté, are situated in the former granary of the barn, and are accessed by a short flight of stairs from the courtyard. These apartments have a communal geranium-covered balcony overlooking the courtyard, and large picture windows with secluded balconies at the rear, offering views over the open countryside.

About the Area

The boulangerie in Dracy in Dracy-les-Couches
The boulangerie in Dracy in Dracy-les-Couches

Dracy-les-Couches, three kilometres away, is a working wine village with a friendly general store and bakery. The small historic country town of Couches, four kilometres away, has a medical centre with doctors, nurses, and pharmacy. There are also two supermarkets, three restaurants, a bank and post office.

St Leger-sur-Dheune, six kilometres from the property, is slightly larger, with all basic amenities and a good supermarket. For more shopping, Chalon-sur-Saone is 26 kilometres away and has several hypermarkets to choose from, and a food market held in the medieval cathedral square on Friday and Sunday mornings.

The market in Chagny
The market in Chagny

Beaune (45 kms) and Autun (20 kms) also have excellent markets and all other facilities. Chagny (20 km) has a popular country market on Sundays with a large range of local produce.

Burgundy is well known for its rich cuisine, using heavy red wine in its sauces, combined with the robust Charollais beef to make boeuf bourguignon, oeufs en meurette and other local specialties. The region also produces a great variety of cheeses.

There are many restaurants within easy access, the nearest being "La Tour Bajole" in Couches, "Au Petit Kir" in St. Leger sur Dheune, "Le Vendangerot" in Rully and "Pierre et Jean" in Chagny, all serving exquisite food at modest prices. We also highly recommend the campsite just five minutes from the property serving excellent local food as well as a large range of pizzas.

The region is also well served with restaurants awarded two or three stars by Michelin, including "Le Jardin des Remparts" in Beaune, "Lameloise" in Chagny, and "L'Hostellerie de Levernois", near Beaune. Chris and Judith are very happy to make restaurant bookings on behalf of their guests.

Nearby are several golf courses: 9-hole in Autun and Chalon, 18-hole in Montchanin and Levernois.. There are several equestrian stables nearby, and trekking in the Morvan Forest.

Water sports are available on the lake in Autun, which has a sailing school and rents out pedalos, boats, windsurfing boards and mountain bikes. The Morvan regional park, which runs west and north of Autun as far as Avallon, is Burgundy's wilderness, with many locations for canoeing, fishing, climbing, and hiking. Rockclimbing is available nearby at Nolay (6 kms,) or for the less ambitious, plenty of hills and walking tracks for hiking. The canal paths are great for bike trips, equally for walking. Bicycles can be rented at En La Marre at a modest price. The apartments contain comprehensive information on all aspects of local life and activities to make your stay as interesting and enjoyable as possible.

About the Region

An evening of wine tasting for guests at En la Marre
An evening of wine tasting for guests at En la Marre

Burgundy is a beautiful, varied region of rolling hills, forests, lakes, rivers and canals, and pretty flower-bedecked villages, but its most obvious attraction is its vineyards. En La Marre is ideally situated for excursions to the Côte d'Or, to visit the famous wine villages of Meursault, Pommard, Nuits St Georges, Gevrey-Chambertin, as well as the Beaujolais area (Fleurie, Julienas, Pouilly-Fuisse, and many more), just south of Macon.

For those interested in buying wines, the owners, both great wine lovers, can help and advise, offer recommendations and arrange wine tastings.

A selection of local produce

Beaune, the wine capital of Burgundy, is 45 kilometres away, with cobbled streets, art galleries, sidewalk cafés, restaurants and wine cellars. Beaune has a popular festival of baroque music running during the summer.

It's worth visiting the Château du Clos-Vougeot (15 kms north of Beaune,) to see the huge wine presses, originally installed by 13th century monks. Dijon (60 kms,) has many places of interest, including the Palais des Ducs, the Musée des Beaux-Arts, and the market square, Les Halles, surrounded by restaurants and particularly interesting to visit on market days.

Autun, the former capital of Burgundy, has a vast Roman theatre and other important Roman remains. Cluny (40 kms), once the largest spiritual centre in Christendom, features a ruined Bénédictine abbey and the Musee d'Art et d'Archeologie. There are many châteaux in the area, the nearest being Château de Dracy in our village of Dracy-les-Couches, the Chateau de Cormatin, north of Cluny, with gardens containing one of the largest mazes in France, Le Rochepot, a little chateau just before Beaune, and many others. For a change of scenery, take a drive into the Bresse, the flat plain west of Chalon, with its handsome brick barns and timbered farmhouses, then go on to the Jura, approximately another hour on from Chalon, with its unique food, wines and mountain scenery.

“This was our first trip to Burgundy and we have loved it! We've done some touristing and a lot of just nesting, walking and biking. We've gone out for lunch most days; our favourite place was Double Sens in Beaune, with excellent fish and Boeuf Bourgignon. Le Petit Kir in St. Leger was also great. We hope to come back some day and are most happy that we came. Thanks!”

“Dear Judith, Chris and especially Muffin! This was a fabulous week of Burgundian life. We had a lovely time starting with a jovial welcome and wine on your deck, then fabulous coffee and croissants at the fantastic Chagny market, exploring beautiful winding back roads, stunning vistas and charming villages and then returning in the heat of the afternoon to enjoy the lovely pool and tranquillity of En La Marre. Thank you for a stellar week; we rested, rejuvenated and look forward to a return visit.”

“We stayed in the Pinot Noir suite at En La Marre in each of the past two years, and enjoyed the experience immensely. The facilities are quiet and comfortable with wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. They also provide a great base from which to explore this lovely part of France, one that boasts exceptional food and wine. We liked the area so much that we’ve now bought a place of our own in a nearby village. We encourage anyone with an interest in France to visit Burgundy, and En La Marre.”
Peter A. - Ontario, Canada

“We spent a wonderful and relaxing week at En La Marre at the very end of the season. Pinot Noir was the most perfect apartment for us. We love visiting the local vingerons and buying wine, relaxing around the pool, eating well and pottering around the wine villages which are delightful. Chris and Judith are wonderful hosts who make you feel so welcome and encourage a house party feel to the place. We have thoroughly enjoyed the barbeques and alfresco meals and getting to know some of our fellow guests. Be warned - it’s seductive. You may never want to go anywhere else again!”

Ah! what an experience! We have already booked in for next year. Thank you, Chris & Judith.”
