Le Duc is an old Quercy farmstead, dating in part back to the 13th century, consisting of three homes surrounding a traditional enclosed courtyard. Le Vieux Séchoir is on the east side of the courtyard, and takes up to five in two bedrooms. Maison de la Cour faces south and sleeps four guests in two bedrooms, while La Petite Grange is ideal for a couple, with one double bedroom and a double sofa bed. The buildings have lots of character, with limestone walls, original oak beams, and chestnut floors.
In front of the courtyard is a large and beautifully-kept garden with lawns, flower borders and mature trees, with plenty of shady spots to relax. The ten by five metre heated pool is surrounded by sun loungers, shade umbrellas, and a swing for children. A table tennis table is also available.
The property is located in the Lot close to the medieval towns of Martel and Turenne. The area benefits from a microclimate giving very warm and regularly hot weather from early to late in the season. Situated on an ancient Pilgrim route and the site of a former monastery, Le Duc was reputedly a stopping place for the Knights Templar.
The comfortable accommodation provides a tranquil base from which to explore this beautiful and largely unspoilt part of France. The Dordogne River flows just 12 kilometres to the east, and there is a wealth of things to do within easy reach, including walking, cycling, canoeing, horse riding, fishing, bird watching, tennis, and golf. This part of the Dordogne valley, with wooded countryside, is away from the main tourist areas, while still within easy reach of everything. The historic region is justly famous for its medieval villages, castles, prehistoric caves, and, of course, its restaurants and gourmet food.
Le Duc is located on the borders of the of the Lot, Dordogne and the Corrèze, and the wonderful variety of surrounding countryside is ideal for exploring by car, by bicycle or on foot. The area is famous for historic villages with Collonges-la-Rouge, Turenne, and Martel being only ten minutes drive away, whilst the medieval towns of Rocamadour, Sarlat, Domme and the prehistoric caves of Lascaux are just a little further. The villages of Les Quatres Routes (two kilometres) and Meyssac (six kilometres) have well stocked small supermarkets as well as butchers, bakers, pharmacies, hairdressers, cafés and bars.
There are two very good value child-friendly restaurants within easy walking distance of the house, and another just two kilometres away in Les-Quatres-Routes. Every day there are open-air markets in one of the surrounding villages and towns offering a wonderful variety of local produce. The surrounding countryside is full of animals and birds from red squirrels and pine martens to nightingales and golden aurioles. Tennis courts are within easy reach, and three golf courses are about 25 minutes away.
Canoeing on the Dordogne is available six miles away, bicycles can be rented locally to explore the by-ways, and horse trekking is available just a kilometre from the house. There are numerous walking trails close by and many more further afield. The area also has various small vinyards and wine producers, a distillery and many regional food specialists, all of whom welcome visitors to taste their produce.
The Départment of Lot, incorporating the limestone Quercy district, is part of the larger region of Midi-Pyrénées in South West France. This is an area steeped in tradition, with a historical legacy of large numbers of fortified medieval towns, villages and castles like Sarlat, Rocamadour and Castelnau. The region is also dotted with Romanesque churches and prehistoric sites, of which the most famous are the caves at Lascaux and Pech Merle.
Famed for its gastronomic excellence, the regional cuisine is characterised by duck, goose, foie gras, truffles, walnuts, and walnut oil. This part of France is also famous for its wines, the majority of which are produced around the regional capital of Cahors, although there are many small local vineyards. There are international airports at Toulouse, Bordeaux, Bergerac, and Limoges. Car rental is available at the airports, and the railway station at Brive (25 kilometres north of Le Duc) is just 4 hours by train from Paris and two hours from Toulouse.
“We’ve had a great week - thanks for hosting us. The boys enjoyed themselves thoroughly with the pool and the warm sunshine - we could not have wished for a better week off. We really enjoyed the Padirac caves and recommend it to your other guests. Tusen takk.”

“Thank you for a brilliant week at Le Duc. The location was just about perfect, with so many beautiful towns and villages within easy travelling distance. Our particular favourite was Rocamadour. There were so many activities nearby that we struggled to fit them all into a week. We loved the kayak trip down the river, the views from the steam train, but the highlight was the trip to prehistoric cave painting at Lascaux (a lifelong ambition fulfilled). Your recommendations about places to eat out were spot on – in this region it really was possible to eat like a king without spending like one! The Creperie up the lane was excellent. We also loved the self- catering facilities in our gite. At the end of a long, hot day a dip in the pool followed by a leisurely barbeque in the shady courtyard was ideal, and the range of local shops and a Carrefour in the nearby village made life so much easier. We have had many “cottage” holidays in the UK and Ireland but our week at Le Duc was something special.”
