Les Hirondelles is a 19th century stone maison de maître or manor house, set in extensive grounds with a swimming pool, in the Entre Deux Mers region south-east of Bordeaux. Once the home of a vigneron or vineyard owner, the spacious house has many original features such as wood-beamed ceilings, open fireplaces and antique tiled and wooden flooring. Three bedrooms accommodate six to eight people comfortably.
The grounds include a wooded park, a garden with roses, lavender, and fruit trees, and a large swimming pool. It is located in a tranquil Gironde farming hamlet amongst rolling fields and vineyards. The house enjoys views over the countryside to the front, vineyards to the side and the swimming pool and garden to the rear. To the front of the house is a small quiet country lane across which is the small woodland which belongs to the house.
There are two spacious double bedrooms, each with a king-size bed. An interconnecting side bedroom houses two single beds and one small double bed.
On the ground floor is the living room with an original tiled floor, an open fireplace, and two sofas, one of which converts to a small double bed if needed. In the dining room, a dining table sits eight opposite an open fireplace.
A door from the dining room leads to the well-equipped kitchen, which has a fridge freezer, an oven, a gas stovetop, and a double sink. French doors from the kitchen open onto the front garden.
An outside dining area under a large maple tree is shaded in the heat of day and is an ideal venue for candlelit diners in the cool of the evening. Adjoining the kitchen is a utility area with a washing machine and two doors, which lead to a bathroom with a bath and shower, and a separate toilet.
The nearest supermarkets, restaurants, markets, cafes and shops are in the medieval towns of Sauveterre-de-Guyenne, Langon and La Réole (all within a 10 to 15 minute drive). For basic groceries, a small supermarket at Morizes is within easy cycling distance.
Restaurants abound in the local villages and towns, where it is easy to find anything ranging from haute cuisine to good country meals, all very well priced. There are public footpaths near the house, winding through unspoilt countryside that has been farmed for centuries.
A wonderful bicycle route winds along a converted railway line from Sauveterre-de- Guyenne through quiet countryside and runs all the way to the centre of Bordeaux.
For sporting activities, tennis is available at Morizes and La Réole, horse riding at Camiran, and canoeing and kayaking at Bommes (near Sauternes). A golf course is also available nearby.
Les Hirondelles is just a half hour's drive from the town of Saint-Émilion, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with medieval churches and ancient ruins. The Romans originally planted vineyards here in the 2nd century.
Bordeaux is an hour away. The capital of the French wine industry, its centre is a finely preserved 18th century city, and it is filled with impressive architecture, museums, restaurants and cafés, and offers excellent shopping.
Wine lovers should not miss the vineyards of the Saint-Émilion, Sauternes, and Grave wine regions. Vineyards typically welcome visitors for tastings and purchases. Also don’t miss the châteaux at Malle, Cadillac, and Malrôme, and the many historic churches and sites such as the Abbey of Sauve Majeure, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The coast is less than two hours away, where you can climb the largest sand dune in Europe.
“Les Hirondelles is an idyllic holiday house. I give it five out of five stars. If you're looking for a classic French gite with your own pool in a beautiful, sunny and peaceful place, then this is for you. The house is tastefully furnished with plenty of room, large gardens and with country walks to enjoy right from the doorstep. There are many beautiful sites to visit, especially St Emilion, and plentiful towns and villages for excellent meals out and wine tasting. Couldn't recommend it highly enough, and at a bargain price!”

“This was my second stay here, I've stayed with a party of 2 families and kids and a party of 5 friends. The house was great for both. It is clean and as described and I recommend it. The pool is lovely, private but set in a mature garden, and well maintained. The pretty garden goes all round the house so you can choose sun or shade for outdoor meals. Inside is comfortable, with high quality and generous furnishings, and we found everything we needed, even Elizabeth David to cook with. It is a house in which you can thoroughly enjoy staying and you feel at home. A week goes quickly here!”
