About the Area

The village of Lourmarin
The village of Lourmarin

The medieval village of Lourmarin is located in the Luberon regional park. It is known as a centre of gastronomy and elegant dining. Among the village's attractions are a beautiful 16th century castle, many art galleries, craft shops, cafés, bars, grocery stores, and a colourful market held in the village every Friday morning. Lourmarin is aso known for the writers who once lived there, Albert Camus and Henri Bosco being the most famous.

The area offers plenty of pleasant walks and hikes and dramatic landscapes in the Luberon hills: La Forêt des Cèdres, the canyon of the Régalon river, and the foothills of the Alps. Lourmarin is within easy reach of many interesting locations, including l'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, a town specializing in antiques, Gordes and the cistercian Abbey of Sénanque, the town of Roussillon, which is surrounded by ochre cliffs, the hill village of Bonnieux, and Lacoste, known as the château of the Marquis de Sade.

Numerous day trips are available which will allow the visitor to discover Provence. Les Baux de Provence is a beautiful Provençal village built on a large rocky outcrop offering a stupendous view over a large plain and the Alpilles mountain range.

Also worth visiting are St-Rémy-de-Provence, a painters' village renowned for its antique stores, and the old quarter of Aix-en-Provence, where one can visit the cathedral of St-Saveur and the studio of the painter Paul Cézanne. Nîmes is also nearby, and one should visit its Roman arena and many ancient ruins.

To the north is the city of Avignon, once home to the medieval papacy, which still has the spectacular Papal Palace, and the famous bridge of St-Bénézet immortalized in the song Sur le pont d'Avignon. The wine roads are a must-see in a region made famous by Châteauneuf-du-Pape and numerous other Côtes-du-Rhône villages.

Lourmarin is an hour from the Mediterranean sea, and among the attractions there are the fishing village of Cassis, and the city of Marseille (with boats to the islands of Lerins and Château d'If). Nearby is the Camargue National Park, a great location for bird-watchers and nature lovers. The Riviera and the cities of Nice and Cannes are only two hours away.

Guest Opinions

“This was our fourth visit to Les Magnanarelles and our fifth to Lourmarin. We can't imagine a summer without our stay here - both house and village. The newly decorated and improved house is better than ever, set in a beautiful and so-Provencal garden, and the pool is the best we have ever, ever found. Lourmarin is a lovely village, unchanging but always interesting, and nicely located for trips to nearby towns and villages, and further afield too”.”
David B. - Broxbourne, Herts EN10 7LD, Great Britain

“From the moment we booked the villa to the last day at handover our experience was faultless. The owner was extremely helpful throughout and her attention to detail was exceptional. The property was immaculate and beautifully fitted. We enjoyed the peace and quiet of Les Magnanarelles but only minutes away from Lourmarin - a village which provides everything you expect in a French location. Our family loved every minute we were there and cannot wait to return, hopefully next year.”
David W. - Hertford, Hertford Shire, Great Britain

“This was our first trip to France. It was even better than we could have imagined!! It's beautiful inside and out. A fireplace, marble floors, balconies, roof top decks, large bedrooms, large bathrooms, modern, elegant and big! The views from the house are breathtaking. The house sits high up on a small mountain. There's a large pool and plenty of outdoor space. We had dinner outside by the pool most nights. The house was extremely clean and well maintained. Honestly, it felt like we were staying at a 5 Star resort. I can't express how happy we are with this house. It made our first trip to France a holiday we'll never forget. We hope to visit France again and if we do this is where we will stay.”
- Sarasota, Florida, USA

“A beautiful house in an idyllic location! Our third - but definitely not last! - stay in this lovely, well appointed house. The pool is excellent, and set in a beautiful garden. The house is very well maintained and perfectly clean. ”
David B. - Broxboume, UK

“The owner is very accommodating. The Magnanarelles is very spacious, tasteful and highly equipped. We found everything about the way it was described. The pool is clean and very well equipped. The garden is a fragrant pine forests and lavender - just a piece of paradise! It is in a quiet neighborhood, and you can do from there many trips.”
Isabel K. - Therwil, Suisse

“ What an amazing view! We so enjoyed our time in Lourmarin. The villa was very clean and the kitchen had everything we needed. We went to several markets in the area, and found the Friday market in Lourmarin the best. It was truly a wonderful experience staying at Les Magnanarelles. We would highly recommend this Villa.”
Andy L. - Windsor , Ontario, Canada

“Lourmarin is one of the prettiest villages in Provence, with great restaurants, cafes, artisan bakeries and a great Friday morning market. Les Magnanarelles is an immaculate home with a long-range view of the Luberon Mountains. We loved the pool, patio and outdoor eating facilities. This was the perfect arrangement for our two-couple group. We would love to return at some point in the future.”
Cathy N. - North Carolina, USA
