Mas la Chevalerie is an independent home on an equestrian ranch in the foothills of the Cévennes mountains just outside the Cévennes National Park. The gîte was converted from a grain barn, located behind the saddlery, and the English owners live in a separate house on the property. A note to returning guests: The former saddlery has been newly converted into an additional large double bedroom.
The gite is set on two floors with two master bedrooms, living/dining room and kitchen on the ground floor. Plus: a mezzanine bedroom with a single bed, a single loft bed accessible by wooden stairs in one of the master bedrooms, and a double sofa bed. An extra single bed is available if needed. The property is perfect for a single couple or for a couple with children, and equally will suit four adults with up to four children between them.
On the ground floor is the main living space. The modern, well-equipped kitchen includes a dishwasher, microwave, electric oven plus 4-hob stovetop, and a washing machine. The dining area has a table for four.
In the living area is a sofa which can be very quickly coverted into an extra double bed as required. One master bedroom on this level has a double bed and also a loft bed suitable for an agile child. The other master bedroom, furnished with desk/table can serve as office/additional sitting room.
Stairs lead up from the living area to the overlooking gallery, which is furnished with either a single bed (an extremely comfortable antique lit-bateau). Also on this level is the shower room and toilet.
Outside is a terrace/patio with furniture and large parasol for dining al fresco. For the winter months, the well-insulated cottage has extremely effective heating, making it comfortable all year round.
The pool is 10 by 5 metres and has an additional shallow area. A surrounding terrace includes sunbeds, and there are shady spots by the pool to drink or dine. It is shared with the owners.
The house is set in a couple of acres of landscaped gardens with open lawns and copses of mature trees including fruit trees, and surrounded by woodland groves, streams, terraced fields and vineyards. The views on all sides are of hills, vineyards, olive groves and nearby mountains.
The house is a few minutes' drive from the medieval town of Sauve, which has a good choice of restaurants. Every day, one of the nearby villages hosts a traditional open-air market selling fresh local produce. The most popular are at Uzès and Sommières.
From the property, there is a great choice of hiking trails and bridleways to explore on foot or horseback. They offer spectacular views across the Cévennes mountains towards the Alpes Maritimes.
The rich history of this region can be seen in everything from medieval villages to the extraordinary Roman aqueduct of Pont du Gard, an hour's drive away.
Closer at hand is the Grotte des Demoiselles, an extensive cave accessed by a funicular railway, which is a popular attraction.
Within an hour is the Camargue, the great salt marsh at the delta where the Rhône river meets the Mediterranean. This nature reserve is home to wild white horses, black bulls, and flocks of pink flamingos.
Nearby is Le Grau-du-Roi on the coast, which has miles of soft and sandy beaches. Equally close is the city of Nîmes, founded by the Romans, where the ancient colosseum rivals that of Rome.
“After more than twenty years holidaying in gites in France we have never met more welcoming hosts than Bill and Estelle at Mas la Chevalerie. The setting is impressive and the gite is very well equipped throughout. The terrace, pool and numerous other places in the thoughtfully landscaped gardens allow you to relax comfortably in the shade on the hottest of days. Animal lovers will adore the horses and donkeys!”

“We are a young family with four children under the age of 10. We decided we needed a holiday at the last minute, so we looked for a gite in France with its own pool. When we arrived at Mas La Chevalerie we were absolutely overwhelmed by the beautiful setting in which we were lucky enough to be staying! One word - paradise - is the only way to describe it! Surrounded by nothing but acres of vineyards, fields, olive groves and set at the foot of a mountain with its very own castle ruin, a very peaceful place to be. But on the other hand there are also so many things to do, e.g. ride a stream train, climb the mountain, visit the Pont du Gard, try locally-produced wine, take a dip in the natural streams or go to the beach. Bill and Estelle, the proprietors, are amazing, worldly people who are genuine, down to earth, polite, friendly and helpful with a great sense of humour. They love their horses, donkeys, chickens, cat and dogs - all child friendly! They love our four children and always make us feel very welcome! For as long as they are there, we will holiday at Mas La Chevalerie. It’s our favourite place to be.”

“We’ve been spending our summer holiday at the charming Mas la Chevalerie for the past three years and have booked to go again this year. The Gite is perfect for us as a family, two adults and two children (now aged 12 and 9), and is fully equipped with everything you need. There’s plenty of room and it’s very tastefully decorated. The farm is set in a stunning rural location and is so quiet, peaceful and relaxing. We’ve spent many an afternoon reading and snoozing in the sun while the kids enjoy splashing about in the pool. Our wonderful hosts Bill and Estelle are both warm and welcoming. They speak English and French and are extremely helpful with an extensive knowledge of the area. There’s plenty to do in this region of Languedoc, whether it’s sightseeing, visiting beautiful quaint old medieval towns and villages, wine-tasting, canoeing, an old steam train and much more. Also it’s only about an hour from the beach. We highly recommend Mas la Chevalerie. We love it there and can’t wait to go back in August.”

“We have had enormous pleasure from our four visits to the gite. Relaxed environment, beautiful surroundings, and hosts who go out of their way to make their guests welcome. After a month’s stay the first year, we immediately booked our slot for the the next one!”
