About the Area

The village of Saint-Saturnin-les-Apt
The village of Saint-Saturnin-les-Apt

The village of Saint-Saturnin-les-Apt (700 meters from the house) is a secret gem. With its two 17th century windmills, its ramparts, doors and towers from the 15th century, and the ruins of its medieval castle, it brims with history, and yet is at the margins of the heavily touristic route: Gordes, Roussillon, and Lacoste are a few kilometers away, and just a little further, Bonnieux, Fontaine du Vaucluse, and the antique capital of l'Isle sur la Sorgue.

Saint-Saturnin-les-Apt

The boulangerie/patisserie sells excellent pastries and breads, and other provisions can be picked up at the grocery stores. There are several restaurants, cafés, and bars in the village. If you can, don't miss the open market every Tuesday: you will see local produce, cheeses, meats, flowers, and sometimes singers or a piano player.

There is a public swimming pool and a tennis court in Saint-Saturnin. Nearby, a lake offers all sorts of activities including sailing, windsurfing, and canoeing. There is also a horse riding center. Finally, you are in the Parc Naturel Régional du Lubéron : quiet countryside, rolling hills and fields of lavender, cherry trees, and fig trees can all be discovered on foot or bicycle.

About the Region

Saint-Saturnin-les-Apt
Saint-Saturnin-les-Apt

Saint Saturnin les Apt is perfectly located to visit many of the most beautiful villages of Provence like Gordes, Roussillon, Saignon, Bonnieux, Lacoste, Lourmarin, and more. L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, capital of antiquities, and Fontaine du Vaucluse, are a mere 45 mns drive away. The nearest town is Apt, a village built by the Romans 2,000 years ago. A visit to Apt’s famous cathedral of Sainte-Anne is a must. The crypt is open to visitors, and is said to contain relics of Sainte-Anne, mother of the Virgin Mary. Apt has a lively market every Saturday, featuring interesting products such as colourful Provençal fabrics, antiques, and woven baskets. This part of France is filled with Roman heritage. Leaving Apt to the west, one crosses Pont Julien, one of the best preserved Roman bridges in France. This road leads to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, known as the birthplace of the famous astrologer and prophet, Nostradamus (Michel de Nostre Dame). His life is chronicled in the Musée Alpilles Pierre de Brun, which is located in a 16th century château. The astrologer's home is at Maillane, seven kilometres away.

The Luberon countryside
The Luberon countryside

At the nearby town of Glanum, there is evidence of a neolithic civilization, with many prehistoric relics. Further west is Les Baux de Provence, with its clifftop fortress which was carved out of stone in the 13th century. It’s worth walking uphill to the castle, to get a full appreciation of why it remained impregnable… until it fell. 50 kilometres from Saint-Saturnin les Apt is Avignon, the City of Popes. It’s an excellent choice for a day trip, as it is full of historic and cultural places of interest. Visit the Palais des Papes, where popes resided during the turbulent 14th century, and the Museum of Le Petit Palais, home to the most remarkable collection of Italian art in France. Further afield, there’s Marseille, with its beautiful old port, or the beaches of the Côte d'Azur.
