La Bellazière is a fully restored 200 year-old cottage, set at the end of a long scenic path, surrounded by hills and fields. Three bedrooms accommodate six guests very comfortably. A swimming pool has been built in the adjoining former barn, which also features a comfortable one bedroom apartment with ensuite bathroom. The pool is heated from the beginning of April to the beginning of November. The house and apartment are always rented together, so guests can be assured of their privacy.
The recent restoration kept the house's character. The thick stone walls are intact, and the home features beautiful oak beams and an elegant granite fireplace. It is located near Le Mans, about two and a half hours' drive from Paris, and closer even to the coastal towns of Brittany and Normandy, such as Saint-Malo and Bayeux, and a direct train from Le Mans takes you right to Disneyland Paris!
The house gets plenty of sunlight and faces a recently planted little orchard. It is surrounded by fields of wheat, corn and pasture. Two outside decks provide plenty of space to sit outside, in the sun or in the shade of the awning, and enjoy different views of an unspoilt countryside.
The main house is spacious and tastefully furnished. The living/dining area includes a dining table for eight and a sofa with a TV and DVD player, and a large fireplace. A den in the back has a sofa and a table to play cards and games for children.
The downstairs also has a bathroom with a shower, basin and toilet. It also has the washer and dryer. A cot and high chair are provided for young children.
The hand-crafted oak staircase leads to the three spacious bedrooms upstairs, one with a double bed and two with two single beds. A second bathroom features a multi-jet shower and a half-bath.
In the converted barn, the two-person apartment has one double bed. It opens onto one of the terraces and faces south-west. It includes a small kitchen and a bathroom with a shower, toilet, and basin.
The parking area, close to the house, will accommodate two or three cars easily. The owners live five minutes away and are always available to help if requested.
La Bellazière is located on very private grounds, yet has easy access to the local villages and towns. The village of St-Germain-de-Coulamer is less than three kilometres away and has a bakery and little grocery store/bar/restaurant that is the village social hub, serving fresh local produce. Guests and locals enjoy playing boules near the local church, and there are some park activities for children. A wider range of shops and services are available within fifteen minutes’ drive in the area as well.
Nearby is the entrance to the Normandy-Maine regional park, a 2000-square kilometre nature reserve with a large network of marked paths and trails offering natural serenity and beauty.
The lake of Sillé-Plage is just nine kilometres away and from its man-made beach, visitors can enjoy swimming and other water sports. Les Alpes Mancelles is a nearby area of hills and forest offering rock-climbing and canoeing. Alençon is the largest town in the area, with a population of just over 50,000. Here guests can find all manner of cultural and practical amenities, including shops, restaurants and car and bicycle rentals.
Other local towns, such as Sillé-le-Guillaume, Mayenne and Conlie are all within a short drive. Local towns and villages have open air markets each week.
The rich history surrounding the Loire valley makes the region a wealth of natural, cultural and historical attractions. Though one of the most storied areas of France, it is still largely unspoilt and serene.
The cities of Le Mans, Tours, Angers, Rennes, Orleans and Caen are within a few hours' drive and make for memorable and rewarding visits. For racing and sports fans, the city of Le Mans has held the world famous Le Mans Speed Race each year since 1923.
The town of Rennes is not far, with its unique architecture and plentiful amenities. The nearby town of Angers is home to the ancestral seat of the Plantagenets, and is home to the renowned medieval collection called the Apocalypse Tapestry.
The city of Caen is a must for history buffs, being the burial place of William the Conqueror. The town still features many buildings that the legendary king had constructed. The city was also the site of much heavy fighting during the D-Day attacks on Normandy during World War Two. There are many places of interest for those seeking to experience the cradle of the Allied liberation of France.
Also within reach for a day trip is the monastic citadel of Mont Saint-Michel, one of the most popular attractions in France. Dramatically located on an island just off the Normandy coast, it has served as a monastery since the 8th century.
Orleans features several museums, parks and other attractions, not the least of which is the historical home of Joan of Arc. The city of Tours is a popular destination for wine lovers around the world, and features many renowned vineyards. This ancient home of the House of Anjou is also the destination of the annual Paris to Tours bicycle race, which attracts crowds in the thousands. Paris itself is only a drive away as well, and many guests like to make a two or three day plan to see the city using La Bellazière as a home base.
The Loire valley, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, has something for everyone; from bustling medieval towns to cosmopolitan galleries and museums, to fine dining, as well as scenic quiet places for hiking and rowing.
“Our second visit to La Bellaziere, and, once again, we were not disappointed! A lovely, quiet, rural gite with an enjoyable swimming-pool (particularly enjoyed by our 6 and 10-year-olds!). Thanks again to Liz, Sylvaine and Robert.”

“I have experienced such peace during my month-long stay at La Bellaziere, away from my busy life in Washington DC! I’ve enjoyed the breathtaking views and the walks around this beautiful property, the hours I’ve spent in the pool and the many wonderful people I’ve met. I found a spectacular Protestant church in Alencon! Sylvaine has just been wonderful. Before my stay, she helped to make sure the wifi connection was fast enough for me to work from there, as needed, and it worked brilliantly! I can’t thank her enough for providing this piece of Heaven for all. I will never forget this experience!”

“We are an American family of 6 and we stayed in this house for a full year (our children attended the local school in the village). This is a beautiful house equipped with anything you may need and situated in the countryside with gorgeous views. We have made so many wonderful memories here and the owners are the nicest, most helpful people we have met. We recommend this home in any season. Wonderful for families, kids can roam free without worry, with beautiful walking paths just outside your doorstep, and the pool is a ton of fun. I cannot say enough good things and we are sure to return.”
