About the Holiday Home

The rooftop terrace
The rooftop terrace

Le Cordonnier is a traditional village house with a rooftop terrace located in the hilltop village of Sablet. It is centuries old, built of stone with two foot thick walls for keeping the house cool in summer and topped with a traditional Provençal tiled roof.

The house sleeps 5 comfortably. It has two bedrooms, both furnished with double beds. In addition, there is a double sofa-bed in one bedroom, a single bed on the mezzanine, and a double sofa bed in the lounge. A cot and a high chair are available on request.

The living room has a sofa and armchairs surrounding a wood-burning stove, with a television and stereo for relaxation. The terrace has a barbecue and a dining table and chairs, so guests can dine outside and enjoy the view over the surrounding hills and vineyards.

The property has been recently renovated by its present English owners, retaining much of its original charm derived from the massive stone walls and exposed beams. When they started renovating this property, they found old bits of leather and shoes in the stone walls along with some rolled up bank notes, evidence that years ago it had been the home of a thrifty shoemaker.

The house is furnished in a traditional and comfortable style, with a Provençal feel and decor. The owners live adjacent to the property, and are always willing to offer help and advice to make a stay in Provence among the most memorable and happy travel experiences.

Le Cordonnier is located in the centre of Sablet, an unspoiled fortified village which clusters around its 12th century church, and is enclosed by ramparts and towers dating from the 14th century.

About the Area

The village of Sablet
The village of Sablet

Sablet is a lively tradional wine-producing village. As such there is no shortage of places where one can sample the high quality Côtes du Rhône that bears its name. There is a good family-run restaurant in the centre of the village, and many others good establishments within easy reach. Sablet offers all the necessary shops : butchers, bakers, groceries, general stores, and deli, and of course the traditional french bar with its shaded patio. There is swimming, tennis, and horseback riding nearby. The backdrop to the village are the beautiful hills of the Dentelles de Montmirail which offer superb hikes, gentle walks and marked mountain-bike trails (bike rental is available in the village). The nearby town of Vaison la Romaine (10kms) is renowned for its Roman vestiges, and boasts the best Provencal market in the region. It also hosts many summer concerts in its antique amphitheatre.

About the Region

The typical landscape of the region
The typical landscape of the region

The region has a rich cultural heritage which can be discovered in the villages and towns around the city of Avignon. Villages with medieval churches, and abundant evidence of the Roman legacy. For nature lovers, the Carmargue must be visited on a one-day outing, as well as the spectacular canyons of the Ardèche and Verdon rivers. The wild countryside of the Drôme with its lavender fields is magnificent, nestled in the shadow of the famous Mt. Ventoux, the first mountain of the alpine chain 1,910m high. From its top, the visitor is offered an unrivaled view that extends on the northeast, to almost the whole Alps. Two hours away towards to the south, one can experience the wonderful Mediterranean shore with its sandy beaches and the cosmopolitan town of Marseille.
