About the Holiday Home

The swimming pool in Maison des Bois

These three homes - Maison des Bois, Châtaignier, and Sérénité - are available as fully equipped self-catering holiday houses. Each has its own private entrance, terrace, and heated swimming pool. Free wifi is available throughout.

In the hamlet of Grand Place are the first two homes, Maison des Bois and Châtaignier. Maison des Bois, with four en-suite bedrooms, can accommodate up to eight guests comfortably. Châtaignier has two en-suite bedrooms and is ideal for a couple, two couples, or a small family.

Each is available separately, or they can be rented together for larger groups of up to 12 who need up to six bedrooms.

Complimentary upgrades to either Maison des Bois or Sérénité are available when Le Chataignier is fully booked.

The houses are surrounded by gardens and woodland to explore.

Sérénité is a separate four en-suite bedroom chalet, suitable for up to 8 guests, in the nearby hamlet of La Lidoire, a ten minute drive from Grand Place. It is set amid woodland, with a private heated pool and views of open countryside.

Complimentary use of a Jaguar Estate is available outside July and August for guests flying and staying in Le Châtaignier. During July and August, it may be available by special arrangement. Guests flying and staying in Maison Des Bois or Sérénité may have the free use of a seven-seater Renault Espace on a first come, first served basis. The owners can arrange airport transfers from Bergerac or Bordeaux.

Grand Place was originally a collection of barns and cottages for farm tenants. The area produced wheat for flour, and when you visit, you can see the original millstones and stone four à pain (bread oven) which produced bread for the locals. The surrounding land is now used to produce wine- and there's lots of it!

Today, it's a tiny, peaceful hamlet of around eight properties surrounded by vineyards, farmland and woodland.

Gite.com Travel Tip

A clear and detailed rental agreement will help to ensure a trouble-free holiday.
It will define your rights and obligations as a guest in a rental property. Before you send your deposit, we recommend that you call or text the homeowner (or the owner’s agent) at the number shown on this page to ensure all is in order and as agreed.
Your rental agreement should state:
  • the name and the exact address of the property
  • the name of the homeowner and/or the agent, as well as his or her cellphone number
  • the name of the tenant and his or her address and phone number
  • the start and the end of the rental period (including time of access and departure)
  • the rent amount and what it includes (linen, towels, cleaning, electricity, water…) as well as what it excludes (heat, wood for the fireplace?…)
  • how the rent should be paid (Pay-pal, bank transfer, money wire, cheque?…), and when the rent should be paid (dates and amounts of down payment and balance)
  • whether a damage deposit is required, and if so, when is it payable, how damage is measured, how and when the deposit is refunded, and how deductions are made
  • what referrals are available or required for and from the landlord and the tenant.

Where to Go, What to Do

The local village, Villefranche-de-Lonchat is just a few kilometres away. It offers a restaurant, mini-markets, a baker, pharmacy, post office and doctor. The village hosts a Marché Nocturne (night market) every Friday in July and August and a spectacular Fête Cantonale in mid- July.

Many nearby villages and towns have street markets, offering excellent regional produce, such as fruit and vegetables, meat and cheese. The best ones are in Castillon-la-Bataille, every Monday, Montpon on Wednesday, Libourne on Friday, Sainte-Foy-la-Grande on Saturday, and Saint-Seurin-sur-l'Isle on Sunday.

During July and August, marché noctures (night markets) are held in local village squares, offering chances to try local gourmet foods and wines.

Kayaking and canoeing are available on the Dordogne and l'Isle rivers. The nearby Lac Gurson offers a sandy beach, cafés, an adventure playground, swimming, and fishing. There is also a large swimming pool and leisure centre at Saint-Seurin-sur-l'Isle.

Castillon-la-Bataille hosts a re-enactment of the final battle of the medieval Hundred Years' War during July and August. Not just for history buffs, it's an event not to be missed.

The region is full of vineyards, where visitors are welcome to visit and try the wines made on site.

The famous towns of Saint-Émilion, Bergerac, Bordeaux, and Périgueux are within easy reach, and all are well worth visiting on a day trip.

Bordeaux, an hour away, has a famous beautifully preserved 18th century city centre. Saint-Émilion's history goes back to prehistoric times and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Périgueux, founded by the Romans, is rich in Roman and medieval history. And Bergerac has two statues of the famous dashing hero, Cyrano de Bergerac, and some interesting museums.
