La Maison des Vignes is a finely-restored 17th century stone house, located on the estate of a Bordeaux château where owner Pascal Meli has been producing a wine that can be found in some of the best French restaurants.

The home has been fully restored, furnished and equipped with the best of taste, and is surrounded by expanses of lush greenery, centennial oak trees, and vineyards. Eight guests can stay in the intimate setting.

The garden is surrounded by vineyards on the estate of Château Bujan. There's an outdoor dining area under the linden trees, which is a beautiful setting for al fresco dining.

The garden also has many mature oak trees, creating pleasant shady spots for lying out. The enclosed private swimming pool is close to the house.

In the living room, comfortable sofas surround a large stone fireplace, making for long relaxed conversations. The kitchen is well equipped, with a cooking range under an exhaust hood and a separate preparation area. It's perfectly set up to start experimenting with the multiple facets of the region’s cooking. The kitchen opens directly onto the dining area, which has a ceiling lined with oak beams and a long wooden dining table in front of the fireplace.

The four bedrooms, named after Pascal’s grandparents, are decorated with period furniture, and each has its own personality. There are two rooms on the ground floor: Noë’s has a double bed, and Émile’s has two twin beds, both decorated in the regional style. They share a bathroom with two washbasins and a claw-foot bathtub-shower. There are also two separate toilets on this level.

There are two more bedrooms on the upper floor: Louise’s has a large single bed, and a bathroom with a washbasin and a shower, and Élodie’s has two twin beds and a bathroom. There is a separate toilet on the top floor.

The white wooden ceiling beams, the pale yellow walls, and the hand-painted furniture give these bedrooms a comfortable and traditional atmosphere.

About the Area

La Maison des Vignes is set on the estate of Château Bujan in the Côtes de Bourg wine-producing area, close to the famed vineyards of the Médoc and St Émilion in the Bordeaux region. The château itself is open to the residents of la Maison des Vignes, and the owner, Pascal, will give a tour of the facility or discuss his winemaking craftsmanship.

In Gauriac, two kilometres from the house, is a bakery, a grocery, a pharmacy and a doctor. The town of Bourg, five kilometres away, offers a good range of amenities, including a traditional Sunday open-air market where one can find vegetables, meat and fish, cheeses, and oysters. In Blaye (seven kilometres), the market takes place on Wednesday and Saturday on the harbour, just in front of the 16th Century citadel. It is a beautiful part of town that should be explored on foot, offering wonderful views of the Gironde estuary from the ramparts. One can find some great small restaurants inside the citadel or between Blaye and Bourg along the estuary.

About the Region

The Bordeaux region has a long and rich history, and its numerous small winding roads are doted with Romanesque churches, medieval castles, small harbours, fortified towns, wine châteaux, and an abundance of hiking trails and a scenic route along the estuary bank.

The owner, Pascal, can also organize visits to the great or little-known vineyards of the Bordeaux region. The best-known wine region of France and the world, Bordeaux’s winemaking traditions go back to Roman times and has defined the lifestyle and the landscape for 2000 years. Discover the Médoc area by the route des châteaux: Château Margaux, Château Latour, Château Lafitte, Château Mouton-Rothschild, and villages with evocative names such as Pauillac, St Julien, Beychevelle, Moulis, Listrac, Margaux, Cantenac and many more.

The city of Bordeaux has wonderful examples of 18th century architecture which makes it one of the best preserved cities in France. The nearby medieval town of Saint Émilion is a classified UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its narrow cobblestone streets should be explored on foot.

Wandering through Sauternes’ rural roads, plan to see the famed Château d’Yquem, as well as the Château de Malle with its gardens, and the Château de La Brède where the 18th century philosopher Montesquieu lived and wrote “The Spirit of the Laws”, said to have been a source of inspiration for the American Revolution.
