About the Holiday Home

La Vieille Grange is part of a 300 year old traditional stone farmhouse, close to the ancient Provençal town of Vaison-la-Romaine. The Anglo/French owners, Alex and Sabine Suter, live on site, and are always happy to offer advice and assistance. La Vieille Grange and the surrounding vineyards are an integral part of their wine estate, "Domaine de l'Amandine", which can be visited on request. The house’s thick stone walls and terracotta tiles keep it pleasantly cool during the endless sunshine of the Mediterranean summers.

Inside, the house is decorated in warm and sunny colours and furnished in a simple, traditional style. Exposed wooden beams line the ceilings. The attractively tiled fitted kitchen is fully equipped. In the same room is a dining table and a sofa. Up a few steps is the double bedroom, which has views of the orchard and vineyards surrounding the house. A shower room adjoins the bedroom.

Sabine always makes her guests feel welcome with vases of fresh flowers, fruit, homemade jam, a baguette, a bottle of their wine and some "tapenade", a local speciality made from olives. Sabine also offers classes in Provençal cooking.

The house is located in St. Véran which is a hamlet bearing the names of the vineyards around the property. The nearest town is Vaison-la-Romaine, which was founded by the Romans. Vaison has a good range of shops and services, and hosts one of the area’s best markets every Tuesday morning, where fresh regional produce is for sale. The town has extensive Roman ruins, which visitors can explore on their own or with a guide. The Roman amphitheatre hosts concerts throughout the summer months. The town also has some very good restaurants, ranging from small traditional places offering excellent value, to outstanding Michelin-starred establishments.

Vaison-la-Romaine has an open air swimming pool, and visitors can rent bicycles to explore the quiet country roads. Horse riding and rock climbing courses are also available in the nearby village of Gigondas. It’s also a great countryside to explore on foot and there are excellent hiking trails leading from La Vieille Grange up into the hills and through the vineyards. Sabine’s family has been making wine for generations, and tours of the cellars and vineyards can be arranged.

Sabine offers Provençal cooking courses whereby guests are shown how to prepare a three course meal in the local style with fresh ingredients, accompanied by Cotes du Rhone wines. The cooking course can be arranged in conjunction with a guided tour of some of the best local wineries with a highly trained english wine specialist. For more information please inform La Grange Vieille on booking.
